About the HeForShe Campaign

HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality developed by UN Women to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights. The campaign’s premise is that gender inequality is not only a women’s issue but a human rights issue, the resolution of which will benefit both women and men- socially, politically and economically. Over the next 12 months till September 2016, the HeForShe solidarity movements intends to mobilize one billion men and boys, bringing together one half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity for the benefit of all.

UN Women seeks a talented, highly motivated and flexible individual to lead the development of a Global Youth Strategy and University championship Program in support of the HeForShe campaign as it seeks to engage young men and youth in support of gender equality. Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Strategic Partnerships and Outreach, the Global Youth Engagement Lead is tasked with strengthening youth mobilization across US campuses and globally.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Global Youth Engagement Lead, will take the lead in designing, developing and implementing an innovative HeForShe youth strategy and University championship programme to enhance the participation of young men and girls in support of gender equality.

She/he will:

  • Develop a comprehensive global youth strategy that put young people at the heart of ending the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally;
  • Develop an engagement strategy and playbook for the HeForShe University Championship programme;
  • Maintain expert, up-to-date strategic knowledge of issues and movements in the youth activism ‘landscape’, share information for purposes of planning and direction-setting for HeForShe as well as for specific country campaigns;
  • Build links and form effective relationships with key allies in youth movements around the world to ensure that HeForShe’s  work learns from and reflects the energy/dynamism of these movements and to encourage take up of our country campaigns by these movements;
  • Ensure there is regular and up-to-date information on HeForShe and youth engagement priorities, outputs, achievements and challenges to campaign’s internal  and external stakeholders and leadership using all available channels;
  • Develop training, communication and advocacy materials for HeForShe university champions;
  • Contribute to campaign unit’s fundraising tasks, as and when required, including writing proposals and concept notes and preparing budgets for proposals;
  • Instigate work to fundraise for youth engagement and HeForShe, in collaboration with UN Women’s Resource Mobolization Unit;
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Impact of Results

The effective support provided to the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women in regards to the 2016 youth engagement initiatives for the HeForShe Campaign. The post impacts the HeForShe campaign results that in turn directly impact on the credibility and image of UN Women.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in communications, media studies, journalism or related field.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years demonstrated experience in advocacy and campaign outreach: demonstrable, proven results of short and long term impact of campaigns;
  • Substantial experience of working with youth in a community or student organising, community development or service delivery context;
  • Substantial experience of working in coalitions, and skills in alliance building and network-formation.

Languages:

  • Fluency in oral and demonstrated superior writing skills in English is required;
  • Proficiency in another UN working language is desirable.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
