Under its mandate to work on sustainable human development, UNDP is currently implementing hundreds of projects in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, mainly through its country offices and the Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH). 
The HIV, Health and Development (HHD) team at the IRH works under the following outcome areas of UNDP’s Regional Programme Document: Inclusive and sustainable growth and development; democratic governance; reduced risk of conflict and natural disasters, including from climate change; and prioritization of poverty, inequality and exclusion in the development debates and actions at all levels.

The regional HHD team  provides country office support and regional advisory services in the following areas:

• Legal and regulatory frameworks for a rights- and gender-based approach to national and regional HIV responses; advocacy for and empowerment of key populations at higher risk for HIV infection and their civil society networks; sustainable financing and optimization of investment strategies for national HIV responses in the context of social protection and inclusive societies;
• Rights-based, multi-sectoral, whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches to health and development targeting both communicable and non-communicable disease control; addressing social, economic and environmental determinants of health and health equity in the context of national and regional development plans and development programming;
• ‘Greening the Blue’ Innovations in measuring and reducing carbon and toxicological footprints of global health initiatives in the context of UNDP’s large-scale Global Fund operations;
• Advocacy, policy and strategy development for the environmental safeguarding of global health initiatives; green procurement in the health sector including engagement of suppliers and manufacturers of health commodities and devices;
• UNDP co-convenes work on capacity and leadership development, governance, multisectoral action and partnerships (together with WHO) within the UN Taskforce on NCDs. UNDP has mandate under Art 5 to advise on and support achieving the objectives of the Convention on Tobacco Control;
• UNDP’s strategy for addressing Social, Economic and Environmental Determinants of Health and Health Equity (SEEDs of H/HE) systematically in the future programming at UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia (RBEC) through a pilot at the UNDP Belarus country office.

Devoirs et responsabilités

UNDP is seeking a graduate journalism/communications student with strong interest in health policy to assist in promoting visibility of the HHD programme as outlined above with an initial focus on the SEEDs of health and health equity project. 

The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Regional HHD Programme Specialist and will be embedded in a team of consultants. The candidate is expected to work extensively through social media and contribute creatively to substantially increase the online outreach and visibility of the regional HHD team. Moreover, the intern will be expected to:

• Support the development and implementation of the SEEDs of H/HE communications strategy for the pilot project in Belarus;
• Support the production of knowledge products related to the SEEDs of H/HE pilot project, including drafting, editing and bringing content developed by the HHD/SEEDs of H/HE Team to reader friendly stage and publication standard;
• Support in raising awareness of the SEEDs of H/HE project and the other HHD components, in particular through accompanying and documenting major strategic events and milestone achievements around the SEEDs project and promoting the visibility of UNDP’s strategic collaboration with WHO Europe;
• Engage with the Regional UNDP Communications Team to build on and advance the HHD’s digital presence through social media, especially through twitter accounts, or other planned and/or existing social media platforms;
• Provide assistance in the drafting of contents for all planned communication efforts and assist the quality control of communication efforts and products;
• Perform other related duties as required

The aim of the internship is to enhance the practical skills to produce high quality web content and the theoretical knowledge of HIV, Health and Development while assisting with the initiatives and plans already in place and those in the pipeline. The internship will also span broader aspects related to health and development, particularly in terms of research tasks.

Compétences

• Solid IT and communications abilities - keen interest in web-design and interactive platforms and awareness of Internet communications, marketing and outreach activities;
• Knowledge of desktop publishing tools, particularly Microsoft Office; knowledge of design programmes will be an advantage (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign);
• Good understanding of web technologies, especially social networking tools and channels;
• Good team worker;
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task;
• Must be able to work in a multicultural environment and be aware of political sensitivities;
• Responsible, responsive, and enthusiastic;
• Be willing to work within the framework of UNDP’s internship policies.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

• Enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme in a field such as journalism, communications, public relations, strategic communications, graphic design or similar;
• Interested candidate will only be eligible if he/she is currently enrolled in the graduate level course.

Experience:

• Knowledge of communications strategies, blogging best practice, social media trends, techniques and information architecture;
• Experience editing images or preparing graphics for the web and email communications;
• Experience in using content management systems, HTML coding, photo editing tools and other web publishing tools desirable;
• Experience in developing and implementing online campaigns and/or marketing strategies an asset;
• Experience in blogging tools (e.g. WordPress), blogging software and content management systems an asset.

Other:

• Must be available full time for a period of 6 months.

Languages:

• Written and spoken proficiency in English;
• Knowledge of Russian is considered a strong asset.

Financial Issues

Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement.
The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

• UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
• UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents, illness or death during the internship;
• Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
• Interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance;
• The purpose of the internship is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies; therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship;
