Background

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Women’s leadership and participation is one of UN Women’s primary areas of work as per its mandate, recognizing the integral role of women in fostering strong and stable democratic processes. In order to promote the leadership and participation of women in decision-making processes, UN Women is required to work with national and local legislative bodies, electoral stakeholders, political parties, civil society and other key institutions and stakeholders. 

As part of efforts to expand learning and codify knowledge on strategies for strengthening women’s political participation, the West and Central Africa regional offices of OHCHR and UN Women will support a good practices and lessons learning forum to share experiences on promoting human rights and gender equality on elections in West Africa.  The workshop will analyze good practices; review strategies for addressing persisting gaps; and elaborate entry points to support women’s participation and gender mainstreaming in electoral processes in future.

A consultant/facilitator will be recruited to assist in coordinating the workshop planning, implementation and reporting. Under the direct supervision of the UN Women Regional Adviser on Governance, Peace and Security, the consultant will be responsible for organizing the meeting, including the preparation of relevant background documents; facilitating the substantive workshop sessions; and drafting a conference report outlining good practices and guidelines on the areas explored, and review its translation in French.


Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will engage in the following tasks:

  • Prepare work plan to guide workshop planning and implementation process;
  • Prepare background documentation for the workshop, including: background paper and guidelines for presenters and speakers;
  • Meet/liaise with key stakeholders at country and regional levels to inform workshop preparations;
  • Provide assistance to workshop presenters to develop their presentations;
  • Provide lead facilitation for three-day workshop, and oversee workshop evaluation process;
  • Prepare workshop report in English, of up to 45 pages for printing and review and edit French translation of the workshop report.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, International Development, Law, Gender Equality or other related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience integrating and or researching gender equality and political participation and representation;
  • Sound knowledge of international standards on human rights, women’s rights related instruments’
  • Experience on UN Intergovernmental processes, including those related to women’s empowerment, gender mainstreaming and gender equality;
  • Previous working experience in ECOWAS countries;
  • Experience working with multi-stakeholder organizations is essential: governments, CSO, UN and other multilateral and bilateral organizations.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French is required;
  • Working knowledge of Portuguese is an asset.
