Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women Multi-Country Office Kazakhstan (Central Asia)/(MCO Kazakhstan) is located in Almaty and upon the request of the Governments covers 4 countries of Central Asia. UN Women’s work is grounded on the growing recognition among partners of the UN Women’s special role and mandate in leading development partners’ efforts on gender equality and women human rights advancement.

To ensure efficient information sharing and knowledge leveraging within UN Women programming activity in the Russian speaking space, to secure timely and the highest quality of knowledge products and working materials translation services ensuring their internal consistency, (e.g. adequate terminology, clarity and precision)  the  MCO Kazakhstan plans to renew a roster of professional written translators from English to Russian and vice versa. Pursuing this purpose UN Women MCO Kazakhstan invites applications for inclusion in the roster.  

Duties and Responsibilities

The Translator will work closely with Knowledge management specialist and/or Programme Specialist/Programme Associate and be responsible for the following tasks/duties:

  • Producing a high quality (content and details) translation of texts from English into Russian and/or vice versa. Content accuracy includes detailed comparison of content, facts and figures and making sure there are no omissions from the source; translations and proofreading all footnotes and/or endnotes, captions under photographs, lists etc; accurate exact and agreed upon translation of UN agencies and title; accurate, correct and consistent usage of UN Women terminology adapted to Russian; 
  • Ensuring Russian and English language excellence and proofreading, including excellent language, vocabulary, syntax, expression and grammar as well as all gender terminology;
  • Ensuring quality check of translation; ensuring that no typographical errors are left in the final text; 
  • Ensuring confidentiality of the original texts and translated materials. The translation submitted to UN Women MCO Kazakhstan under the given ToR is the property of UN Women and cannot be submitted, distributed to or used by any other party, unless arranged otherwise; 
  • The translator is obligated to work within the required deadlines and be available to UN Women for comments and corrections. The standard timeframe for the translation delivery shall be as follows (from the date of submission by UN Women MCO Kazakhstan).

Translation volume (page of 2100 characters no spaces):

  • Ordinary translation 1 – 10 pages - 2 days;
  • Urgent translation 1 – 10 pages - 1 days;
  • Ordinary translation 11 – 30 pages - 5 days;
  • Urgent translation 11 – 30 pages - 3 days;
  • Ordinary translation 31 - 60 pages - 10 days;
  • Urgent translation 31 - 60 pages - 6 days;
  • Ordinary translation 61 and above pages - upon agreement;
  • Urgent translation 61 and above pages - upon agreement.

Competencies

  • Proven knowldge in translations with UN agencies;
  • Knowledge of key UN Women concept on gender equality issues (understanding of vocabulary and terminology) and language style (based on the findings of test translation);
  • Advanced user of computers and office software packages, experience in handling web-based management systems.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University degree in Translation, Philology, Journalism, English Teacher, other relevant field.

Experience:

  • Have not less than 5 years of experience in translating/interpreting in gender and development related area;
  • At least one of the additional areas listed above (democratic governance, poverty reduction, environment and energy, crisis prevention and recovery, MDG, HRBA, HIV/AIDS, or capacity development);
  • Experience of working with   human rights organizations, international organizations, research institutions.

Language:

  • Fluency in Russian and English.

Evaluation:

UN Women applies fair and transparent selection process that takes into account the competencies/skills of the applicants as well as their financial proposals. The contract shall be awarded to translators who are the most technically qualified and provides the best value for money.

Only candidates who meet minimum requirements (University degree in Translation, Philology, Journalism, English Teacher, other relevant field, 5 years of experience in translating/interpreting, fluency in Russian and English, proven experience with international organizations) will be contacted for making test translation provided by UN Women MCO Kazakhstan. Only the candidates successfully passed technical evaluation, i.e. passing through 70% of the total score (please see the table below) will be requested to submit a price quotation per 2100 characters depending on urgency (urgent/ordinary) and language (English-Russian, Russian-English) for further evaluation.

Criteria:

  • University degree in Translation, English Teacher, Philology, Journalism (max 30 points);
  • Have not less than 5 years of experience in translating/interpreting in gender and development related area. At least one of the additional areas listed above (democratic governance, poverty reduction, environment and energy, crisis prevention and recovery, MDG, HRBA or capacity development) (max 30 points);
  • Have not less than 5 years of experience in translating/interpreting in gender and development related area.   • Knowledge of key UN Women concept on gender and development issues (understanding of vocabulary and terminology) and language style (based on the findings of test translation): knowledge of gender and development terminology – 30; style – 40; grammar – 30; overall translation skills – 20; comprehension of the source text – 30; pointing – 20; spelling – 30 (max 200 points);
  • Advanced user of computers and office software packages, experience in handling web- based management systems) (max 30 points);
  • Fluency in Russian and English(max 30 points).

Maximum total technical scoring: 350 points.

It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
