Background

UNDP Eritrea Country Office (CO) offers selected outstanding university students the opportunity to acquire experience working as interns in the United Nations System. The internship provides a compact understanding of UNDP work in Eritrea, Africa Region and globally and provides practical experience in UNDP and UN Communications. Under the supervision of the Communication and Knowledge Management Officer, the intern will be involved in implementing UNDP Eritrea Communication Strategy for Advocacy, Knowledge Management and Publication (2015 – 2016).

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for:

  • Assist with the implementation of the UNDP Eritrea ?Communications Strategy i.e. writing press releases, reading knowledge outputs, checking outputs for printing, following up with graphic designers etc.;
  • Assist with writing and editing content for UNDP Eritrea website;
  • Assist in updating content for UNDP Eritrea social media sites; Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, Exposure, You tube, etc.
  • Assist in coverage on UN/UNDP events e.g. Photography, voice and video recording.
  • Assist in sourcing content for use in Advocacy materials such as calendars, diaries, cars, posters, banners etc.;
  • Assist in sharing CO updates on communities of practice and UNDP Eritrea Knowledge Management Platforms;
  • Support meetings and follow-up communication development partners;
  • Assist in preparation of reports, corresponding presentations and promotional materials;

Assist the CO in undertaking other tasks on ad-hoc basis depending on current needs.

Work Arrangements:

  • The intern will work full-time in the UNDP office in Asmara, Eritrea;
  • Work space will be provided, and the intern will have access to a computer;
  • Internships are not remunerated. UNDP policies do not provide for interns to be compensated for travel, salaries and living expenses.

What to expect:

  • Work in United Nations provides exposure to the UN system operations.

Gaining hands on work experience in developing knowledge products (such as newsletters, briefs, bulletins, press releases and op-eds), event planning & coverage, media relations, advocacy, knowledge management and web content development.

Conditions:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc. Proof of medical accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out (i.e. Asmara).

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.

  • Demonstrated experience in work related to communications, social media outreach and journalism, whether voluntary (such as campaigning), private (such as blogging, creative writing, etc.) or professional;
  • Excellent analytical, communication (oral and written) and writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Photography skills are an asset;
  • Understanding of the United Nations system, operations and structures;
  • Work under minimum supervision and tight deadlines;
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office applications

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or graduate-level degree (second university degree, or equivalentr or higher) programme in public relations/communication/journalism/knowledge management or related field.

Experience:

  • Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Knowledge Management
  • Experience/demonstrate interest in communications, event management, and web development.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team structure in a multicultural environment;
  • Excellent computer capabilities (Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher);
  • Notions of Design/Graphics.

Language:

  • Strong writing and speaking abilities in English;
  • Knowledge of Tigrigna or Arabic is an advantage.
