Background

The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) is the United Nations organization that contributes to peace and development by mobilizing nearly 7,000 volunteers working in almost all of the United Nations agencies in more than 120 countries. Volunteers come from more than 150 nationalities.  In addition, UNV mobilizes nearly 12,000 on-line volunteers, delivering assignments remotely and contributing to the work of the UN agencies.

We are looking for an Executive Coordinator to lead UNV. The role reports to the Administrator of UNDP and is one of a team of senior leaders working across the development system focused on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  To learn more about UNV, visit http://unv.org

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Coordinator (EC) provides vision, innovation, and organizational leadership, and strategically directs and manages UNV. The EC defines UNV’s long-term goals and immediate objectives, taking into account UN General Assembly resolutions and UNDP Executive Board decisions. The EC leads the organization's development, articulation and implementation of the substantive as well as the financial and operational aspects of UNV, i.e. through the UNV Strategic Framework and its strategies, policies and guidelines.

Competencies

The role requires an inspirational senior leader who can provide vision and lead UNV internationally and within the UN system. Working with donors and representing UNV at the highest level, the person we seek will combine skills in engagement and advocacy, with the ability to lead a multicultural team of over 300 personnel worldwide. 

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in a relevant social, political, economic or applied scientific and/or business administration or management field.

Experience:

  • At least 15 years of substantive experience that combines programme management, policy engagement and practice including in the area of civic engagement, financial and people management.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver organizational results on time and within available resources.
  • Extensive development and operational management experience both at the field level across the developing world and at a corporate level within an international public organization.

Language:

  • Fluency in English and good working knowledge of either French or Spanish. Knowledge of other UN languages and/or German would be an asset.
