Background

UN Women is the United Nations entity for gender equality and women’s empowerment. It is an inter-governmental body that provides financial and technical assistance to innovative approaches aimed at fostering women's empowerment and gender equality at global, national, and regional levels. In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of UN system: DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM.

The objective of this assignment obtain an accurate and comprehensive analysis of the portrayal of gender and women’s issues in five Tanzanian national dailies for the period of January 2015 to September 2016.  The report on the analysis of the findings will then be used to develop recommendations and code of conduct to be shared with local media houses in Tanzania, as part of the global Step It Up Media Compact. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a framework for a gender analysis of the portrayal of women’s issues in pre-selected print media.
  • Produce a report that comprehensively analyses how women’s issues and gender rights are covered in English and Kiswahili national dailies. Collect and analyze any additional information on media coverage from a gender perspective that will inform the writing of the report.
  • The report must include detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis on how women’s issues are reported, including, but not limited to: reporting on women’s rights, women’s political participation, leadership and empowerment, role in industries and the workforce, violence against women and girls, rape, FGM, child marriage, early marriage, health, education, opinion, and editorials.
  • From the findings of the analysis, propose recommendations for better, more balanced and gender-sensitive reporting in local print media. These recommendations will then inform an official Code of Conduct for dissemination to national media houses for their adoption.
  • The report and recommendations will be produced in both English and Kiswahili, and both will not be more than 60 pages, in addition to annexes as appropriate.
  • The recommendations must be practical, concrete and realistic to implement in the Tanzanian media landscape. The recommendations should also inform senior leadership in media houses on how to develop and customize their own Code of Conduct policies.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced University Degree in the field of Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Gender Equality, Human Rights or relevant discipline. 
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in working in, or with, local media gender equality and women’s empowerment within the context of Tanzania.
  • Significant experience in gender analysis of the media, the conduct of media in reporting and covering women’s issues
  • Excellent and proven analytical and drafting skills, proficient in the production well written, well-researched and comprehensive reports, including qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Ability to complete complex assignments in a timely manner and delivery quality results;
  • Previous work with other international organizations or UN Tanzania agencies, and familiarity with gender equality and women’s issues highly recommended

Language:

Fluency in English and Kiswahili mandatory
