Background

UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates UN system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world

UN Women works with governments, UN sister agencies, civil society organizations, regional economic commissions, academic and research institutions, and multilateral partners to promote women’s economic empowerment and increase their access to economic opportunities, especially for those who are most vulnerable and excluded.

Unit/ Project Background:

Women’s economic empowerment is one of the priority areas of UN Women, as reflected in the organization’s Strategic Plan 2013-2017. Located in the Policy Bureau in New York, the Economic Empowerment team’s work is organized along three main lines: support inter-governmental processes, such as CSW and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals; development of policy and programming initiatives to support member states; and policy advocacy to promote gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.

Two of the priority initiatives that the Women’s Economic Empowerment team is currently engaged with are:

  1. Development and Implementation of a Flagship Programme on Decent Work, Social Protection, and the Care Economy.  This programme includes three policy/programming pillars: Addressing Legal and Access Barriers to Employment and Decent Work, Social Protection, and Unpaid Work/Care Economy;
  2. Supporting the preparations for the 2017 CSW – the focus of which is on “Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Changing World of Work.”  An important partner for both of these priority initiatives is ILO.
