Background

Regional Office for Caucasus, Central Asia and Ukraine (ROCCA) (www.unocha.org/rocca) OCHA promotes early warning and disaster preparedness, and works towards strengthening the national capacity and that of the international community to respond to slow and sudden-onset disasters quickly and in a coordinated fashion.

The main goal of ROCCA’s communications strategy is to promote a more enabling environment for humanitarian action in Central Asia and the Caucasus and a more effective coordination system through public information, partnerships, donor and media outreach. The scope of communications duties includes reporting, internal communications, capacity-building, public and media relations, donor outreach and information management.

The internship is intended to:

  • Promote a better understanding of humanitarian issues in the region and globally, and give an insight into the work of the United Nations
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to communications unit in strategic engagement with new partners
  • Assist office in effective social media management and engagement
  • Provide UNOCHA with the able assistance of an outstanding young student specializing in a field related to their own work

Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Intern will be expected to work full-time for the duration of minimum two months (with possibility of extension to six months). During the internship, the following activities are to be completed:

  • Assist in carrying out research / mapping exercise aimed at exploring opportunities for engagement with the private sector in the region of Caucasus and Central Asia
  • Assist in social media activities aimed at engaging audience in humanitarian affairs globally and regionally
  • Media monitoring for internal awareness and reporting

The intern will be expected to perform other tasks, as required.

Throughout the internship, the supervisor will provide guidance and feedback, and upon successful completion of the assigned duties, the intern will receive may request a letter of recommendation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

Applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in a graduate school at the time of application and during the internship that is relevant for the internship. Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, public relations or liberal studies. Outstanding candidates with a Bachelor’s degree only or currently in their third or fourth year of education may also be considered for this internship.

Language requirements:

Fluency in oral and written English and Russian. Knowledge of Kazakh is an asset.

Experience:

Research experience is required. Background in media relations, social media marketing, English-Russian translation and/or office management desirable.
