Background

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) offers internship position working in our office in Kathmandu, Nepal, starting February 2017 for six months. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate and post-graduate students interested in security matters, in particular disarmament, arms control or non-proliferation issues, to get involved with UNRCPD’s work and to assist in the promotion of United Nations global norms of peace and disarmament.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time for five days per week (Monday –Friday) (35 hours

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Director and the direct supervision and management of the Deputy Director (and possibly other officers) of the UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, the intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, the performance of the following duties:

  • Assist in monitoring, researching and analyzing trends and developments in the area of peace and disarmament in the region;
  • Draft background papers, communications, inputs  for reports etc.;
  • Assist in organizing conferences, meetings, workshops and other events on disarmament issues;
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining good working relationship with regional organizations,
  • Parliamentarian organizations, policy institutes and NGOs in the region;
  • Assist in administrative/logistical tasks related to operation of the Centre;

Required Skills and Experience

Acadeic Qualification and Experiences:

  • Should be enrolled in Masters’ degree in political science or any other relevant field or
  • Be enrolled in the final year of Bachelor Degree in political science or any relevant subject
  • If selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation
  • Expertise and knowledge on conducting research
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent drafting skills in English

Work Experiences:

  • Experience in the field of peace and disarmament or a related area is desirable. Experience with website maintenance is an advantage.
  • Good skills in the usage of computers and MS Office Package programmes such as MS Word

Language Requirements:

  • Proficient in English and Nepali language.
