Background

The Management Advisory Services Team (MAST), which is part of the Country Office Support and Quality Assurance (COSQA) Division in the UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub is looking for a full-time intern to help in analyzing and visualizing data on the operational and programmatic performance of the 24 UNDP Country Offices in the Asia-Pacific region.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Regional Management Advisor, the intern will support COSQA’s efforts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of UNDP Country Office operations. He/she will provide business critical insights using data analytics, experimental design, impact analysis and advanced predictive modelling to help drive forward strategic new initiatives. He/she will turn data into compelling interactive visualization representations, create dashboards and infographics, and assist in the development of web applications to generate insight to quickly and accurately see how UNDP key business processes are performing. He/she will work collaboratively with the rest of the COSQA team, which includes UNDP country programme specialists, management specialists, partnerships advisor and communications advisor.

Specifically, the incumbent will:

  • Assist in monitoring and analysing a range of performance indicators that measure Country Office effectiveness and efficiency, and make proposals for improvements;
  • Design and develop interactive visualizations and dashboards, and produce infographics;
  • Perform other tasks as requested.

Competencies

  • A love of data and “building” things ? interactive charts, gifs, dashboards, structuring data, and exploring new ways of engaging decision makers through data storytelling;
  • Ability to translate complex statistical analysis into clear and concise narrative, with impactful graphic presentations of data;
  • Good visual spatial intelligence and experience with translating data into visual tools and trackers (i.e. dashboards, pie charts, graphs, infographics); with sound experience and understanding of effective data visualization;
  • Strong UX design and data visualization skills.  Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis and analytic approaches in a clear, precise, and actionable manner;
  • Frontend data visualization libraries (D3, HighCharts, Protovis, etc…)
  • Web Frontend Development (HTML, CSS, Javascript)
  • Experience in using graphic design programmes including MS Publisher, Adobe Illustrator and/or InDesign, etc.
  • Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing, in a clear and concise style;
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with colleagues of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), the candidate will preferably be enrolled in a degree programme in Data Visualization, Computer Science, Interaction Design, Information Design, Engineering or a related subject.;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated interest in the field of development.

Language:

  • Written and spoken fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in another Asian language considered an asset.

Conditions:

  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for any positions (Fixed-Term Appointment, Temporary Appointment, Service Contract, Individual Contract) in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

Subsequent Employment:

  • There is no expectation of employment with UNDP following an internship.
