Background

The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) is the senior most UN official and the representative of the UN Secretary-General in Sri Lanka. The central task of the RC is to coordinate the operational activities of the UN and all humanitarian actors. This is done in consultation with Country Representatives of UN agencies and members of the humanitarian community, in line with the objectives and priorities of the Government of Sri Lanka.

The Office of the Resident Coordinator supports the RC and the UN Country Team in Sri Lanka to effectively carry out these duties. A Field Coordination Officer supports the work of the RC office at the field level.  

The RCO is looking to offer an internship to someone interested in learning more about the work of the United Nations and development and peacebuilding issues in Sri Lanka. Ideally the internship will be on a full time basis. However, should the candidate be pursuing studies at the same time, arrangements can be made for a part time internship.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Internship is based in Jaffna, and the intern will work alongside the UN Field Coordination Officer based in Jaffna. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Field Coordination Officer, whilst also maintaining a link with the Coordination and Transition Specialist in the RCO, Colombo.

The specific tasks are outlined below:

  • Provide coordination, administrative and logistical support to the Field Coordinator and related RCO activities in the Northern Province;
  • Monitor the media, especially the tamil language press, and provide summaries in English of key issues (developmental, political, resettlement issues etc);
  • Provide translation support (from Tamil language to English language) for key statements and other reports/articles issues, for example those released by the provincial administrations;
  • Provide research support as and when requires to supplement information reported in the media; and
  • Any other tasks as advised by the Field Coordination Officer.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the field of development, interational relations, politics, law, communications, public relations, languages, journalism or a related field;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Additionally:

  • Fluency in Tamil and English languages and strong writing skills.
  • Ability to think and work logically and work precisely with attention to detail
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal).
  • Willingness to travel within the Province.
