Background

UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub, along with the Pacific Office in Suva, primarily provide UNDP Country Offices in Asia and the Pacific with easy access to knowledge through high quality advisory services and technical support based on global applied research and UNDP lessons learnt.

The second priority is to provide regional thought leadership, build partnerships and promote regional capacity building, which allow UNDP, governments and other development partners to identify, create and share knowledge relevant to solving urgent development challenges.

More concretely, the work of the Bangkok Regional Hub include the following:

Policy Research & Analysis

  • Producing country and regional reports, policy briefs, applied policy research papers and codification exercises of lessons learnt.

Programme Development & Technical Backstopping

  • Strengthening Country Office capacity with regard to design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of UNDP programmes in a host country.

Strategic Policy Advice & Advocacy

  • Promoting UNDP priorities with partners and seeking to provide them with timely and up-to-date advice on development challenges, building on comparative experience and knowledge inside and outside of UNDP.

Capacity Development & Training

  • Supporting institutional development and dedicated training for country office staff, host Governments and partners. The Regional Hub helps countries to draw up strategies to address capacity constraints that inhibit realization of the Millennium Development Goals. The Regional Hub is committed to the idea that all external interventions should build sustainable capacities based on local values.

Knowledge Services

  • Acting as a regional hub distilling knowledge and experience into usable products and tools, collecting and disseminating it. The Regional Hub also provides expert referrals and facilitates transfers of expertise between Country Offices.

Communications

  • To relay the impact of UNDP’s programmes to partners, public and the media, the Regional Centre provides advisory support for effective communications and advocacy, including coverage of related news events, launching of relevant publications, advice on national media strategies, advance press work for UNDP officials visiting the region, and communications training.

Gender equality and the empowerment of women are at the heart of UNDP’s development mandate.  For UNDP, gender equality is primarily a matter of human rights.  It also recognizes the role of gender equality and women’s empowerment as a driver for sustainable development.  UNDP believes that unless women and men are able to fully realize their rights in all spheres of life, human development will not be advanced.  Gender equality and women’s empowerment are integrated into every aspect of UNDP’s work in supporting countries through a range of programmes and projects.

Gender inequalities remain common throughout the Asia-Pacific region. This persistence is particularly troubling when considering the enormous economic progress the region has made. ).  This continuing discrimination and neglect threaten the security and well-being of women and their families throughout Asia and the Pacific.

In the recent years, UNDP’s key contribution to the regional level gender equality advocacy in Asia and the Pacific has been demonstrated in the following areas:

  • Supporting women’s economic empowerment
  • Integration of gender equality perspectives in development planning
  • Promoting gender-responsive access to justice
  • Addressing gender-based violence prevention
  • Increasing women’s political participation
  • Engendering HIV and AIDS prevention and response
  • Advocating for the rights of LGBTIs
  • Addressing gender-based vulnerabilities to disasters and conflict
  • Promoting women’s inclusion in early recovery and peacebuilding
