Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Addis Ababa Action Agenda of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development recognized that there can be no gender equality without investment. The Agenda reiterated the need for gender mainstreaming, including through targeted actions and investments in the formulation and implementation of all financial, economic, environmental and social policies. 

In recognition of the need of transformational financing in order to achieve SDGs, especially Goal 5, the Strategic Partnership Division, UN Women, seeks a Consultant to develop and implement UN Women’s engagement strategy with High Net Worth Individuals.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of UN Women Head of Private Sector Relations and in close cooperation with the Director of Strategic Partnership Division as well as Chief of Advocacy and Communication, the  Consultant is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Developing new channels of giving and new fundraising approaches for High Net Worth Individuals;
  • Supporting UN Women in advocacy and partnership initiatives targeted at High Net Worth Individuals;
  • Supporting UN Women country and regional offices to facilitate locally tailored approach to High Net Worth Individuals; and
  • Creating opportunities for UN Women to leverage existing networks to promote our work.

Expected Output:

  • Mapping of Global Best Practices followed by the private sector and other international development organizations in reaching out to High Net Worth Individuals (31 July, 2017);
  • Support the development of UN Women’s strategy for High Net Worth Individuals (31 August, 2017);
  • Develop toolkits which will assist in reaching out to High Net Worth Individuals (30 September, 2017);
  • Develop a capital campaign with High Net Worth Individuals and young CEOs/Entrepreneurs/philanthropists (31 October, 2017);
  • Facilitate opportunities with High Net Worth Individuals and other strategic parties. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Initiate and develop at least 10 high-level partnerships with High Net Worth Individuals.
  • Support in organizing HNWI fundraising events in 4 locations as follows:
  1. Private Sector Philanthropic Forum scheduled the 25th September, 2017  in New York City;
  2. Private Sector Philanthropic Forum for Women in Humanitarian Action taking place the 1st and 2nd October, 2017 in Dubai;
  3. Nordic Private Sector Philanthropic Forum to be held in Oslo the 1st and 2nd November, 2017; 
  4. Private Sector Philanthropic Forum scheduled in December, 2017 in London.
  • Support in planning a Private Sector Philanthropic Forum for Africa for January 2018;
  • Related Knowledge products on working with High Net Worth Individuals (31 December, 2017).

  • Demonstrated sensitivity, discretion, tact and courtesy in relation to gender equality and women’s rights, development principles and projects;
  • Highest standards of integrity, discretion and loyalty;
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
  • Treats all people fairly and without favouritism;
  • Understanding of UN Women procedures, rules and regulations is an asset.

 Functional:

  • Understanding of the interest of the private sector for working with the UN an asset;
  • Proven track record in fundraising, resource mobilization, preferably with Ultra-High Net Worth Individuals, High Net Worth Individuals and family offices;
  • Knowledge of gender equality and women empowerment is desirable;
  • Outstanding communication skills (both written and oral) in English (other UN languages an asset);
  • Ability to eloquently articulate UN Women’s case for funding support;
  • Proven networking skills, and ability to mobilize support on behalf of UN Women;
  • Good negotiating and people skills;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Excellent coordination and organization skills;
  • Experience in strategy development is preferred;
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely;
  • Knowledge and understanding of UN system.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in business administration, communications, social sciences, international relations, public administration or other related fields.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in the field of advocacy, fundraising, business development;
  • Experience engaging with High Net Worth Individuals is mandatory;
  • Proven network of High Net Worth Individuals;
  • Extensive fund-raising experience (including major gifts, corporate and foundation relations) in diverse organizational settings;
  • Experience in the private sector is an advantage;
  • Experience in women’s empowerment gender equality is an advantage.

Language:

  • Fluent in English;
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
