Background

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation.

UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of UN Volunteers throughout the world. UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive, and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity.

In 2013 UNV engaged over 6,300 UN Volunteers of which approximately 4,700 were international UN Volunteers. With an average age of 38 years and the requisite professional skills and qualifications of some 5 to 10 years relevant experience, UN Volunteers served in 129 countries in 2013 and came themselves from 152. More than 80% of UN Volunteers come from developing countries. The financial equivalent of the programme activities exceeds US$200 million annually. In addition, as the focal point in the United Nations for the International Year of the Volunteers (IYV) 2001 and IYV+10 in 2011, UNV is active in the follow-up to the IYVs, for which the key objectives are the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteerism.

UNV is headquartered in Bonn, Germany and has approximately 150 staff– the majority in Bonn with some dozen positions in different UN peacekeeping missions, and other Headquarters locations (e.g. New York and Tokyo).

The Volunteer Recruitment Resources Section (VRRS) is responsible for the UNV's global talent pool and for outreach, identification, assessment and submission of candidates for international UN Volunteer assignments.

In cooperation with the UNV Human Resources Section (HRS), VRRS is currently building up a UNV Programme Officers Pool, which includes qualified, pre-assessed and evaluated candidates earmarked to become the next generation of UNV Programme Officers . UNV Programme Officers (are the senior country level representatives of the organization in ensuring and delivering key results of the UNV Strategic Framework.
