The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Turkmenistan consists of eight UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, namely: UN Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. (UN Women), UN Department for Safety and Security, International Organization for Migration (IOM), the regional mission of the United Nations Regional Center of Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCCA), and the affiliated International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank).  The UNCT each year develops and implements a joint action plan coordinated by the Resident Coordinator and her office.

To assist and strengthen the work of the UN Communications, the Resident Coordinator’s office, on behalf of the resident UN Agencies, is advertising a vacancy position for a Communications Intern. The Communications Interns will be competitively selected for the specific needs of the relevant UN Agency.

Under the direct supervision of the concerned UN Agency Communications Officer, the Communications Intern will provide communications support to ensure the joint UNCT, relevant UN Agency Work Plan including specific Communications/Advocacy related activities is implemented. The Communications Intern will provide assistance joint UN and Agency specific communications/advocacy related activities. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the respective UN agency Communications Officer the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Overall support for the planned UNCT joint communication activities
  • UN visibility and media materials (print, video and digital): research innovative and interesting content, design and format; support in developing the content and design; help in informal/quick pretesting of the materials among young people as appropriate.
  • Social media: research interesting and additional content from other countries and partners, support in producing new content for UN social media accounts, monitor for the new content/feedback; drafting messages; actively expanding the network of followers.
  • the UN and agencies ’website: assist in updating the UN website; research and suggest new and interesting content, draft content
  • Communication meetings, events and campaigns: help with preparatory work, including organizational matters, help to document respective activities; logistical support to the organization of visibility/outreach and knowledge-sharing events
  • UN library: support in regular maintenance and suggest innovative library management solutions; update and maintenance of the photo/video archive
  • UN information board: support in maintaining, update and collecting information for the board
  • Participating in monthly meetings of the UN Communications Group involved in the implementation of the UN Communications Strategy and Plan;
  • Translating UN-related materials (English, Russian, Turkmen) if required;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Turkmenistan Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in the 3, 4 or final academic year of a university degree programme or in a graduate school programme in public relations, communications or any other related field; or

(b) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) a one year period of graduation;

• Be computer literate in standard software applications and preferably skilled in one of the graphic design/video editing software;

• Speak and write clearly and effectively in English and Russian (Turkmen language will be an asset);

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.

There should be no expectation of employment by the United Nations Turkmenistan upon completion of the internship. United Nations Turkmenistan interns are not paid.
