Background

The United Nations Development Group (UNDG) unites the 32 UN funds, programmes, specialized agencies, departments, and offices that play a role in development. Since 2008, the UNDG has been one of the three pillars of the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination, the highest-level coordination forum of the United Nations system.

At the regional level, six Regional UNDG Teams play a critical role in driving UNDG priorities by supporting UN Country Teams with strategic priority setting, analysis and advice.

At the country level, 131 UN Country Teams serving 165 countries and territories work together to increase the synergies and joint impact of the UN system.

The Development Operations Coordination Office (DOCO) is the secretariat of the UNDG, bringing together the UN development system to promote change and innovation to deliver together on sustainable development.

Key to the work of the UNDG is supporting Governments through their UN country teams on delivering the Agenda 2030. The 2030 Agenda Advocate will promote this global effort capturing the work of the organization and its 31 members and observers towards achieving the new sustainable development goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Knowledge and Innovation Team (KIT) is looking for a successful candidate that will capture the work of the organization to promote the Agenda 2030 and to support its secretariat in the organization of the General Assembly events on 2017.

Identify and disseminate country level initiatives to promote the Sustainable Development Goals:

  • In close collaboration with communication focal points in the field, identify experiences and content related to the promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Promote country initiatives in a visual and appealing way through data visualization, video clips, photo stories, etc.
  • Use data visualization to disseminate the role of coordination to implement the SDGs.

 Support coordination and documentation of advocacy efforts to promote the 2030 Agenda at country level:

  • Share good practices in communications, advocacy and innovation at country level to promote the 2030 Agenda.
  • Ensure Coordinator Officers and Communication Officers at the Resident Coordinator Office are aware of the latest initiatives to promote the 2030 Agenda.

Support the management UNDG social media channels (Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube) to promote the Agenda 2030:

  • With the technical support of the Communications Specialist, manage and promote UNDG portal, Silofighters Blog and the UNDG Transparency Portal.
  • Write, edit and coordinate posting of timely and relevant online content including blogs, country stories, news articles and publications.
  • Analyse the effectiveness of online efforts through traffic reports and other feedback.
  • Coordinate with UNDG members to update social media content.
  • Identify and promote online multimedia materials in key social media.

Support DOCO in activities linked to the General Assembly in September 2017:

  • Support the Knowledge and Innovation team and the UN DOCO Directorate around the communication and social media activities organized by the UNDG during the General Assembly in September 2017

Research Open data policies in the UN and beyond

  • Conduct comparative analysis of open data policies and present conclusions to senior management across the UN

Required Skills and Experience

Essential qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Public Relations, Communications, Data visualization or related field
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in Public Relations, Communications, Data visualization or related field (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation
  • Knowledge or experience in the development field
  • Full proficiency in current office software applications, including Adobe InDesign software
  • Experience in advocacy, journalism and multimedia content production
  • Full proficiency in both written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in French will be an advantage

Terms and Conditions

  • Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNDP/UN DOCO, its officials and staff members.
  • UNDP/UN DOCO internships are not remunerated and must make his/her own arrangements for living expenses. Travel costs to and from the duty station and living accommodations are his/her own responsibility or those of the sponsoring institution.
  • Passports and Visas: The intern is responsible for obtaining his/her own necessary passport and visas when required.  UNDP/UN DOCO can only issue a letter stating acceptance of an individual as an intern and the conditions governing the internship.
  • Confidentiality and Publication of Information: Interns will respect the confidentiality of information that he/she collects or exposed to at UN DOCO.  No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNDP without the explicit authorization of the Head of Bureaux or Office.
  • The Internship is not connected with employment and there is no expectancy of such.  Interns cannot apply for posts advertised internally to staff during the period of internship.
  • UNDP/UN DOCO accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which requires transportation to the home country or country of Residence for further treatment; or results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the home country, or country of residence
