Background

In line with its Private Sector and Foundation Strategy, UNDP is becoming increasingly well positioned to support innovative approaches of inclusive market and business development engaging with the private sector and other stakeholders to improve opportunities for the poor to participate in markets as producers, employees or consumers.

With Africa being a major focus of UNDPs work, a strategic, regional Private Sector and Inclusive Market Development for Poverty Reduction in Africa project, the “African Facility for Inclusive Markets” (AFIM), operated from November 2010 to 2014. AFIM is now part of the Regional Bureau for Africa’s Regional Programme Document (RPD), under Outcome 1, “Growth and development are inclusive and sustainable, incorporating productive capacities that create employment and livelihoods, especially for the poor and excluded”, and more specifically Output 3: Regional and sub regional systems and institutions enabled to support countries to achieve structural transformation of productive capacities that are sustainable and jobs- and livelihoods-intensive.

The Regional Programme is implemented by the UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The main activities in relation to private sector work under Outcome 1 / Output 3 are as follows:

Activity result 3.1.1 - Regional institutional capacity enhanced:

  • Prepare a business plan and mobilize a coalition of support around an AUC African Inclusive Markets Excellence Centre (AIMEC) to assist countries in developing livelihood and employment programmes;
  • Advance sustainable and resilient food value chains in Africa;
  • Advance regional agri-food value chains in Africa;
  • Support follow up to Investment Opportunity Briefs for Great Lakes Region.

Activity result 3.1.2 - Transformation of productive capacities 

  • Support a regional agro-business supplier development programme;
  • Support inclusive business ecosystems in Africa in partnership with regional institutions;
  • Create an interactive African youth entrepreneurs’ online portal and award scheme;
  • Support the development of the impact investment sector in Africa;

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Regional Private Sector Special Advisor of the IGSD Cluster, the intern shall perform, inter alia, the following tasks:

Knowledge Management and Communication:

  • Prepare relevant communications materials (brochure, newsletter, success stories etc.);
  • Assist in developing and disseminating IGSD Cluster, Private Sector Unit knowledge products;
  • Support the online community of practice.

IGSD Cluster, Private Sector Unit Website Content Management and Expansion:

  • Draft, design and implement IGSD Cluster, Private Sector Unit website update;
  • Expand IGSD Cluster, Private Sector Unit website to cover additional focus areas and success stories;
  • Support updates of IGSD Cluster, Private Sector Unit’s website as required.

Research and Data Management:

  • Research private sector and inclusive market development topics and compile information on national and regional level projects;
  • Undertake research on related donors’ initiatives and inclusive business activities by the private sector;
  • Manage files and online database of related documents in a structured way.

Programme Implementation:

  • Draft, review and edit concepts notes, knowledge products and presentations;
  • Review and shape inclusive business models and partnership concepts;
  • Participate in meetings and perform other programme implementation support tasks as required.

The more specific focus will be decided in consultation with the intern; taking into account his / her skills development interests.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the fields of business, economics or development studies, or any other field in the social sciences;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Work experience considered as an asset; but it is not a requirement;
  • Understanding of private sector and inclusive market development would be beneficial;
  • Experience with website content management, web design and development as asset (with content management systems such as Adobe CQ5, Joomla or similar);
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the UN, and of UNDP in particular, and have a personal commitment to UNDP's Statement of Purpose  and to the ideals of the UN Charter.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English;
  • Knowledge of French would be an asset.

Intern requiements:

  • Applicants should indicate which months they are available part and/or full time and when they complete their studies;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The Intern is expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for his/her education programme;
  • The intern will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation etc.;
