Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. The Communications & Advocacy Section is responsible for proactively advancing the strategic positioning of UN Women and its mandate in this context through effective outreach. It employs a variety of communications strategies and channels to raise awareness of gender equality issues with large audiences and to inform about the organization’s work.   

Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Communications & Advocacy, the Audio-Visual Specialist is responsible for the production, archiving and provision of video, audio and photo material on gender issues and UN Women’s work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Undertake and oversee UN Women in-house audio-visual productions and research:

  • Arrange for, supervise and undertake filming and editing of UN Women videos for multiple purposes and audiences, such as broadcast, campaigns, digital outreach, social media, intergovernmental meetings and events, resource mobilization, etc.;
  • Create content for new digital storytelling platforms, including virtual reality headsets, mobile and social media, such as Facebook and Instagram;
  • Arrange for, supervise and/or undertake filming and basic editing of short video messages of senior leadership; to that end, liaises with consultant video producers, as needed;
  • Maintain and expand a roster of freelance video producers;
  • Compile b-roll material on UN Women priority issues;
  • Respond to media requests for audio-visual material;
  • Undertake filming of UN Women’s work as required.

Maintain and expand distribution channels for UN Women productions:

  • Maintain UN Women YouTube Channels ensuring that they are regularly updated with new uploads of UN Women productions and related descriptions; updates video content on UN Women maintained web sites;
  • Work with social media team to ensure content creation for top tier events and campaigns.Explores new distribution channels, including broadcasters, internet aggregators, mobile, media and event spaces;
  • Liaise with UN DPI and UN sister agencies to ensure distribution and cross posting of content.

Undertake and oversee archiving of UN Women’s video content:

  • Maintain and expand UN Women audio-visual archive;
  • Create logged and labeled back-ups of hard drives and video content;
  • Maintain video Dropbox account, ensuring content is ready for distribution on short notice.

Provide guidance and support to UN Women HQ sections and field offices:

  • Provide strategic guidance and policies on UN Women’s audio-visual online presence; monitors regional UN Women YouTube  and other online accounts for quality and branding;
  • Develop and maintain guidelines on video productions, including ethical guidelines for video production, sample TORs for field video productions and other relevant guidance;
  • Support and backstop staff-generated video content;
  • Support AV coverage from field visits of the Executive Director and other senior staff members.

The key results have a significant impact on the visibility and reputation of UN Women as a leading source of knowledge and information in the areas of gender equality and women’s rights. The results have an impact on the success of the Strategic Partnerships, Advocacy, Civil Society, Communications and Resource Mobilization initiatives in supporting global advocacy and outreach campaigns, and on the performance of UN Women staff members, enabling access to and sharing of information and knowledge generated from within and outside UN Women and, thus helping UN Women achieve its strategic goals.

Key Performance Indicators include:

  • In-house audio-visual productions developed on time, on scope on budget;
  • Quality of content for new digital storytelling platforms;
  • Distribution channels for UN Women productions well maintained and expanded as agreed;

Functional Competencies:

  • Excellent knowledge of video production processes and formats;
  • Good videography skills;
  • Good knowledge of basic video editing; familiarity with Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premiere;
  • Good knowledge of digital motion graphics and visual effects applications such as After Effects an important asset;
  • Solid knowledge of existing UN and commercial video archives;
  • Good knowledge of and interest in online distribution channels, including commercial channels; 
  • Ability to use Office software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access);
  • Familiarity with gender issues an important asset;
  • Familiarity with the UN system an asset.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master degree in journalism, communications, international or political affairs or related field;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the area of video production in various formats, such as for documentary, social media and campaign purposes;
  • Solid experience in working on international development issues;
  • Experience on gender issues an important asset;
  • Experience in managing portfolios and projects an important asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
