Background

The Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has the overall responsibility for providing policy, programmatic and technical support to facilitate sustainable and resilient development at national and sub-national level. UNDP Strategic Plan identifies addressing disaster and climate risks as key to building resilience. The Climate Change and DRR Team (CDT) of BPPS ensures that risk considerations are fully integrated not only into UNDP’s development programming but also into the overall national development planning through its Country Offices (COs).

The Climate Change and DRR Team is seeking the support of an intern in communications. This person will work closely with the communications and external engagement team of the Team, and will help to collect and share stories, publications and best practices via UNDP’s online and media outlets. This includes support to draft press releases, search for and share UNDP success stories from country offices, prepare and share social media guidance, collect high-quality photos, and support to draft scripts for short videos, amongst other things.

As the Climate Change and DRR Team prepare for the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23 climate change conference) in Bonn, Germany, this is a prime opportunity to support the communications team in expanding outreach and mobilizing support for UNDP’s work in climate change, DRR and sustainable energy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Contributing to the overall approach of CDT’s team on knowledge management, the intern will responsible to undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the collection and sharing of success stories from UNDP country offices globally;
  • Assist in training the team in social media techniques, specifically the use of twitter;
  • Support the preparation of tweets and facebook posts for the UNDP corporate website;
  • Support to draft press releases and news stories;
  • Assist with the promotion of publications;
  • Support to carry out partner and external engagement events;
  • Assist in collecting quality UNDP photos, including labeling and storing them appropriately for use;
  • Support preparations, promotion and logistics for UNDP’s involvement in the ‘Pathway to Paris’ advocacy concert at Carnegie Hall in November.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Must be currently enrolled and participating in a Master’s degree program in development, communications, media, public relations, environmental studies, other social sciences programs.

Experience:

  • Good writing skills, as well as strong analytical capacity;
  • Proven experience in social media (twitter especially);
  • Good research skills and ability to navigate UNDP country websites to find information/photos, etc.;
  • Computer proficiency: excellent command of MS Office;
  • Familiarity with design software (indesign, photoshop) a plus.

Language:

  • Fluent in English.

Important Notes:

Interns’ Expenses

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. All costs connected with an intern's participation in the programme must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.

Insurance

UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship.  As interns are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, and they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with UNDP. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.

Subsequent Employment

The purpose of the Internship Programme in UNDP is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement the intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Should an offer of employment be envisaged, a 3-month break, from the end of the internship, must be respected. Interns cannot apply for posts or consultancies during the period of internship.

UNDP is not responsible for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the interns during their internship.
