Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN System Coordination Division at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support work on issues related to gender equality, empowerment of women and girls with disabilities, and disability inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Policy Specialist, the main responsibilities of the Intern will be to assist work related to gender equality, empowerment of women and girls with disabilities, and disability inclusion including the following;

  • Research, analysis and writing on issues related to gender equality, empowerment of women and girls with disabilities, and disability inclusion
  • Support internal communication and communication with external partners
  • Attend meetings and support note-taking;

Learning Objectives: 

  • The internship offers the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UN Women’s work related to gender equality, empowerment of women and girls with disabilities, and disability inclusion.

Competencies

  • Familiar with women’s rights issues or international development/relations.
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Self-starter; organized; able to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in gender, human rights, development or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or;
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

Language:

  • Good communication skills (written and oral) in English.
  • Other languages are an asset.
