Background

Context

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Project Background

UN Women is the United Nations entity for gender equality and women’s empowerment. It is an inter-governmental body that provides financial and technical assistance to innovative approaches aimed at fostering women's empowerment and gender equality at global, national, and regional levels. In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of UN system: DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM.

The purpose of this internship is to provide support to the activities of the implementation of the programmes within the Communications department of UN Women Tanzania. During the internship, the intern will have the opportunity to support in the production of communications deliverables, global advocacy campaigns and event management. Finally, the intern will have the opportunity to learn about gender equality and women’s empowerment in the national and global context, and the functioning of the United Nations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Communications and Media Specialist, the intern will assist and supplement the work of the communications department in the following tasks:

  1. Editorial support: Draft, report, proofread and translate UN Women communications products, such as articles, newsletters, press releases, brochures, social media posts, etc.
  2. Global campaigns: Assist in event management for UN Women global campaigns HeForShe and UNiTE to End Violence against Women through grassroots advocacy, coordinating with YUNA, youth ambassadors.
  3. Documentation and Research: Provide information for news stories, analyze data and research studies to produce programme factsheets and policy briefs on gender in Tanzania, document meetings, events and workshops
  4. Media Outreach: Prepare press kits, track media stories, draft press releases, create and update media lists and outreach for Step it Up Media Compact.
  5. Design and archiving: Produce and design visuals for communications products, archive and caption photos for sharing; assist in the knowledge management and archiving of the UN Women products and publications.   
  6. Media monitoring: collect and share weekly news bulletin containing news on UN Women Tanzania, and all gender and women’s issues related news reported in local media

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studied in Journalism or Communications, or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Previous internship or work experience in either journalism or institutional communications; experience with media outreach, advocacy or public relations.
  • Familiarity with gender equality and women’s issues.

Language:

Fluency in English and Kiswahili mandatory

Conditions:

  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UN Women in any official capacity;
  • Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.
