Background

The Global Support Programme (GSP) is a jointly implemented programme by UNDP and UNEP that provides support to developing Parties in order to prepare National Communications (NCs) and Biennial Update Reports (BURs) that are submitted to the UNFCCC in a timely and high quality manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

GSP is seeking a graphic designer intern with strong interest on climate change topics to assist in promoting visibility of the GSP in the context of the National Communications (NCs) and Biennial Update Reports (BURs).
The candidate will be expected to contribute creatively to the GSP work and to substantially increase its outreach and visibility. The intern will be expected inter alia to:

  • Contribute with creative ideas to reach and engage different audiences;
  • Design infographics on climate change topics in line with the GSP’s priorities
  • Maintain the GSP website, ensure it is continuously updated, and drive a continuous process of design renewal, to ensure that both content and design are fresh, contemporary and engaging; 
  • Conceptualize and create communication products for different media;
  • Elaborate, brochures, reports, one pagers, and fast facts;
  • Support the GSP team in other tasks as deemed necessary by the hiring manager.

The internship will also span broader aspects related to climate change policies, particularly in terms of research tasks.

Required Skills and Experience

Academic Qualifications / Education:

  • Enrollment in (a) a graduate-level degree programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
  • Desired field of study as graphic design, marketing, communications, journalism, knowledge management, new media, or similar.

Experience:

  • Proficient in main graphic design and photo editing software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop);
  • Very strong infographic design skills;
  • Experience in managing web pages is desirable
  • Very strong skills in producing communication products such as factsheets, blogs etc.;
  • Solid knowledge on designing for print and digital media;
  • Good understanding of web technologies, especially social networking tools and channels;
  • Knowledge on climate change issues is desirable.

Languages:

  • Written and spoken proficiency in English;
  • Knowledge of other UN languages would be desirable.

Notes:
Interns are selected on a competitive basis.

Financial Issues:
Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement. The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

Selected candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out. Selected intern must have medical and life insurance.

Candidates who are selected must submit following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme or graduation certificate from a relevant post-graduate degree (not older than 1 year at the time when the successful candidate is expected to commence the internship);
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out. Selected intern must have medical and life insurance.

UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.

Subsequent Employment:
The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 
Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
