UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.?Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. The UN Women Multi-Country Office (UNW MCO) works in India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Unit/ Project Background:
Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. Women make enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home. But they also remain disproportionately affected by poverty, discrimination and exploitation. Gender discrimination means that women often end up in insecure, low-wage jobs, and constitute a small minority of those in senior positions. It curtails access to economic assets such as land and loans. It limits participation in shaping economic and social policies. And, because women perform the bulk of household work, they often have little time left to pursue economic opportunities.
In this context, the Women’s Economic Empowerment Unit is, at present, focusing on engendering macro-economic analysis and national economies in the region, assisting to develop policy and praxis accountability and monitoring mechanisms for women’s economic empowerment, access and rights to land and productive assets, gender parity in wages and safe migration.
UN Women past work in the region has correspondingly focused on centre-staging women’s resource rights and capabilities, their voice and agency and ending all forms of gender based violence in policy formulation and programme implementation on sustainable livelihoods. UN Women supports the leadership and participation of rural women in finding solutions to the problems and issues that affect their lives, especially improved food and nutrition security and enhanced rural livelihoods. UN Women also engages with various government bodies to develop and implement laws and policies that promote equal rights, opportunities and participation, so that rural women can benefit from India’s growth story, obtain financing, upgrade their skills, market their goods, and make a strong contribution to inclusive economic growth in an environment free of discrimination and violence.
The purpose of this internship is to provide support to the knowledge building and management activities of programmes within the WEE unit. The intern will receive overall supervision from Programme Specialist – Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Unit.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
