Background

UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

Mexico Country Office develops projects and strategic activities in four key areas: i) enhancing women’s participation and leadership; ii) promoting women’s economic empowerment; iii) ending violence against women, and; iv) improving gender-sensitive planning, budgeting and statistics. Programme strategies include knowledge production and capacity strengthening, in alliance with governmental, civil society and academic actors as well as international organizations to improve public policies for women’s human rights and gender equality.

Operations provide support to the implementation of country programme activities and ensures actions are taken in accordance to UNW rules and regulations.

Under the supervision of the Operations Associate, the intern supports the Office Operations by performing a variety of standard administrative processes ensuring high quality and accuracy of work.


Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities & Learning Objectives:

Under close supervision and guidance of the Operations Associate, the Intern is expected to undertake the following activities in support to Operations Unit:

 

•Monitor, review and follow-up on actions related to the administration activities and interaction with administration units;
•Assist with day-to-day administration processes between the UN and external contractors and or Consultants;
• Support Procurement, Finance and Human Resources activities, prepare and process documentation as required; •Perform other related administrative and logistical duties, as required;
•Maintain up-to-date work unit files (both paper and electronic) according to the Global Filling System;
•Receive phone calls and visitors and refer them to the appropriate source or reply personally to queries when possible.
•Photocopy a variety of documents and other materials;
•Coordinate extensively with service units and liaise frequently with other internal units at duty station;
•Operate a variety of office equipment in the performance of basic office functions, e.g. photocopier, printer, scanner, etc.;
•Coordinate meeting and events arrangements;
•Perform other duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in Business Administration or related fields, such as Finance, Business Management or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

 

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in Spanish are required; Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

  • A completed online application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile) is required. All applications must include (as an attachment) the completed UN Women Personal History Form (P-11) which can be downloaded from http://www.unwomen.org/about-us/employment          Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

Once the candidate has been selected, the following additional documents must to be submitted:

  • Letter of enrolment from school or proof of (Master’s programme) graduation if within less than one year;
  • Scanned visa document/scanned passport document if no visa is required;
  • Scanned medical insurance document.

 

Note:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

 

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

 

  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
