Background

UNDP’s Human Development Report Office (HDRO) continues to strengthen its print and online presence as means to increase its outreach efforts and reach new targeted audiences.
HDRO is seeking a post-graduate student with an interest or experience in communication to assist in building and implementing a communication strategy for external outreach efforts on Human Development.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director, the Intern will contribute to the tasks described below.

  • Support the Director, Deputy Director and Communications Specialist in the preparation a range of communication products and materials such as op-eds for newspapers;
  • Draft, edit and proofreading of the HDRO blogs and bi-weekly newsletter;
  • Support HDRO’s presence on social media including through 1) regular updates and 2) the development of social media campaigns;
  • Analyze the nature of human development references and features in the news and share relevant news updates with the communications team; and
  • Contribute to strengthen HDRO network and partnerships among development journalists and media outlets.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s / postgraduate university programme in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Social Sciences or International Relations.

Experience:

  • Experience in communications and social media outreach;
  • Proficiency in using new technologies, web-based platforms and social media networks; familiarity with html is a plus;
  • Self-starter; organized; able to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities;
  • Familiarity with one or more developing regions;
  • Experience in engaging and building communities on social networks, particularly Twitter and Facebook.

Languages:

  • English, with working knowledge of at least one other UN language desirable.

Conditions:

Candidates who are shortlisted and contacted by UNDP must submit the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Have a valid visa to work in the US;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out (i.e. New York, USA).
  • Have medical and life insurance.
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;

Note:
UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
UNDP does not pay for internships. Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP;
The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.;

Subsequent Employment:
The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
