Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) envisions to contribute to Africa’s efforts to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities and exclusion through implementation of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. 

UNDP’s regional partnership development and resource mobilization efforts support the effective delivery and sustainability of the Regional Programme and Country Office activities. Of importance is to ensure a systematic and coherent approach to partnerships at the regional level and laying the ground for the effective mobilization of an adequate amount of resources. 

As an essential part of the Regional Centre for Africa, the partnerships team provides a strategic, substantive and coherent approach to outreach and partnerships, and creates a meaningful UNDP image. The team collaborates closely with the other units and provide support to Country Offices in order to establish linkages between the overall strategy, the programme achievements and implementation.

The team at the Regional Centre for Africa is looking for a competent intern who will support the partnerships and resources mobilization specialist based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Partnership and Resources Mobilization Advisor, the intern shall perform, inter alia, the following tasks:

Research and Data Management:

  • Research on existing Partnership and Resource Mobilization opportunities within the Region. Undertake research on related to donors intelligence both at regional and country level;
  • Manage files and online database of related documents in a structured way.

Knowledge Management and Communication:

  • Assist in developing and disseminating the Partnership and Resources Mobilization Strategies and best practices;
  • Support the team in organizing webinars, online Community of Practice;
  • Support updates of Internet and Yammer as required.

Donor Engagement Support:

  • Draft, review and edit concepts notes, knowledge products and presentations;
  • Review and shape resources mobilization and partnership concepts;
  • Participate in meetings and perform other support tasks as required.

The more specific focus will be decided in consultation with the intern taking into account his/her skills development interests.

  • Good writing and researching skills;
  • Strong analytical aptitude, communication and presentation skills;
  • Good organizational, time management and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines;
  • Attention to details and proven ability to work independently and effectively;
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office;
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of French would be an asset.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in the fields of communications, marketing, public relations, development studies, economics, business, and related fields;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Understanding of Partnership Development, Fundraising and/or Resources Mobilization would be beneficial.;
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the UN, and of UNDP in particular, and have a personal commitment to UNDP's Statement of Purpose  and to the ideals of the UN Charter;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English;
  • Knowledge of French would be an asset.

Intern requiements:

  • Applicants should indicate which months they are available part and/or full time and when they complete their studies;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The Intern is expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for his/her education programme;
  • The intern will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation etc.;
