Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representation Office in Brussels, Belgium seeks a qualified intern for a period of 6 months starting end of April or early May 2018 (the exact date will be determined between the successful candidate and UNDP).

The Representation Office in Brussels focuses primarily on deepening the strategic partnership between UNDP and the European Union (EU) in their joint effort to help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In the last 15 years, the EU and UNDP have partnered in around 140 countries fighting against poverty, enhancing respect of human rights and the rule of law and enabling equal access to development opportunities for all and.

The Representation Office supports also the implementation of joint UNDP-EU endeavors on the ground. The internship will be with the Country Office Support Unit which is, among others, raising the understanding of the administrative and contractual side of the UNDP-EU partnership, from early engagement, throughout implementation and up to and including the close of activities. This internship will provide an opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge on the EU-UNDP partnership worldwide. The intern will also be able to learn about EU contractual procedures and participate in a large range of events organized by the UNDP Representation Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of UNDP Programme Analyst, the intern will perform the following tasks:

  • Collect and catalogue information relating to EU-UNDP cooperation, as per given specifications;
  • Assist in data processing (for PowerPoint presentations, infographics, etc.);
  • Draft and consolidate documents;
  • Assist in the organization of conferences, forums, or other collaborative events;
  • Attend conferences/workshops relevant to the subject area, produce summaries of events.
  • Perform other tasks as may be reasonably required.

Competencies

  • Strong organizational and research skills;
  • Excellent analytical, communication and writing skills;
  • Computer proficiency in standard software applications is a prerequisite (MS Office, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Internet);
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrates integrity and fairness, by modelling the UN/UNDP’s values and ethical standards;
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Proficiency in French and/or Spanish will be a significant asset.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)       be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)       be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)       have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Language:

Fluency in written and spoken English. Proficiency in French and/or Spanish will be a significant asset.
