Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

The Communications section supports the positioning of women’s empowerment and gender equality as key issues on the international agenda and establishes UN Women’s role as the global authority in this context.

This entails showcasing its leadership on gender equality through contemporary video and multimedia products, highlighting the organization’s results-oriented, impactful interventions on the ground.

Video and multimedia products are to support the three objectives of the Communications strategy:

  • Drive and support advocacy efforts to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality;
  • Increase UN Women’s visibility to support its resource mobilization goals;
  • Enhance public awareness on gender equality goals and UN Women’s role in achieving ?them.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Women is seeking the services of a talented video producer who – in consultation with UN Women’s and Communications teams – will:

  • Support UN Women HQ functions through video production and post-production.
  • Shoot, edit and ensure delivery of video messages for UN Women Senior Management Team, as requested during the consultancy period;
  • Edit footage and interviews into a variety of video deliverables intended for broadcast, web, social media outlets, and UN Women internal use;
  • Draft scripts, outlines and storyboards for original content production;
  • Edit field footage into short branded video about UN Women initiatives;
  • Share and submit subsequent cuts – at least two rounds (a rough and fine cut) – until finalization and delivery of a final cut.

Under the supervision of the UN Women Audio Visual Specialist, the consultant will be responsible for:

  • Providing the necessary professional videography equipment and software necessary for the requested coverage, as determined in consultation with the Supervisor;
  • Ensuring that all required videography services are completed on deadline;
  • Ensuring that correct video formats are used as requested by UN Women;
  • Ensuring that any and all third-party materials (photos, video, music, etc.) used in the video deliverables are licensed or cleared for use by UN Women.

Competencies

Functional:

  • Ability to film broadcast quality video and audio: HD 1920x1080 or better;
  • Have Adobe Premiere Pro editing skills (and other professional editing software, such as Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, etc.);
  • Have knowledge of different video formats and file conversions for online and social media platforms;
  • Have online video publishing and file transfer skills;
  • Have working knowledge of lighting video interviews;
  • Teamwork, professionalism and communication skills.

Core:

  • Interest in the UN system and general knowledge of development issues;
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree in journalism, filmmaking or related field.

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in journalism and filmmaking.

Language:

  • Fluency in English; knowledge of other UN languages (French, Spanish, Arabic) an asset.

  • Consultant must own their own professional production and editing equipment. Full frame cameras with prime lenses preferred. Other suggested equipment includes: wireless and shotgun microphones, tripods, light kit and dolly/sliders.
  • Knowledge of gender issues an advantage.

 

Copyright and Rights:

UN Women will have exclusive rights to the all the footage and final product.

  • UN women will provide a release and producer is responsible for coordinating all releases from interviewees and anyone appearing in new footage.
  • UN Women has the right to use the video in perpetuity in web and on multimedia platforms and upload any still images it to our photo database.
  • UN Women can provide the raw video footage to other UN organizations or the media at no cost, as is the practice.
