Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Unit/ Project Background:

UN Women Bangladesh, in line with UN Women’s corporate strategy of engaging closely in the Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Actions have been working extensively in the field of disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and humanitarian crisis. Since 2014 UN Women has been assisting Rohingya refugee women to promote women’s leadership and address gender inequalities in the two Rohingya refugee camps that existed since early 1990s. This joint initiative, although small in scale, has enhanced women’s participation in camp activities and strengthened community based protection mechanisms.

Alarmed by the condition of the newly arriving Rohingya women and children in Cox’s Bazar, UN Women distributed dignity kits and blankets to the families of vulnerable women as immediate

humanitarian support in December 2017. A Multi-Purpose Women’s Centre (MPWC) has been set up and functioning. From the center, a comprehensive support package is been offered to refugee women, which includes space for children to accompany their mothers as well as female-only washing facilities and mobile phone charging stations. The MPWCs is functioning as a hub for skills building, with an emphasis on portable skills.

In October 2017, UN Women led the setting up of inter-sector Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) working group in Cox’s Bazar, under the Inter-Sector Coordination Group (ISCG), consisting of sector gender focal points and gender advocates. UN Women and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office also co-host a Senior Gender Capacity Adviser (GenCap) who provides inter-agency technical support on gender mainstreaming in Cox’s Bazar, in addition to technical and coordination support to the aforementioned GiHA WGs.

UN Women is seeking an Intern to support the Cox’s Bazar Sub Office of UN Women Bangladesh in its contribution to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women in humanitarian action in Bangladesh through its newly established Inter-Cluster Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) Working Group.
