Background

Skillful communication broadens the impacts of new policies, helps governance reforms take root, and attracts and fosters strong partnerships.

The Regional Bureau for Africa, which leads UNDP’s work in across the Africa Region, is seeking a graduate student with an interest in global issues and communications to work at the forefront of development and communications with the Bureau.  This post will allow the opportunity to assist the Regional Communications Specialist in developing communications campaigns, media strategies, social media projects, and many other creative endeavors, that raise awareness for and engage people in UNDP’s efforts in Africa to support progress towards sustainable human development.

Duties and Responsibilities

The interested candidate will:

  • Research relevant English and French language material on English social media platforms (Twitter)
  • Monitor audience engagement social media platforms.
  • Produce graphic material to be used on print material and social media platforms.
  • Provide assistance in curating and presenting stories, images and videos in UNDP Africa’s web content management system.
  • Assist in reviewing content, proofreading and reformulating if necessary for optimal web presentation.
  • Assist the Communications Specialist in maintaining contacts with content providers in order to solicit material for website, and/or for approval of drafts
  • Assist in filming and editing video content

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Student enrolled in a graduate degree programme in a development or communications related field such as, journalism, international relations, political science, anthropology, sociology, public or business administration (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Web experience is an asset;
  • Experience in using and knowledge of Adobe in Design, Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro.

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of French is an asset

Conditions:

  • Any individual hired under these conditions are not staff and therefore, are not covered by UN Staff Regulations and Rules;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.
