Background

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Associate the intern will be expected to provide support to the UNV activities in the country.

The candidate is expected to work on a daily basis with the colleagues in the UNV COT and regularly with UNDP, UNV/HQ Bonn and the general public. Thus, it is expected that he/she will develop and maintain viable working relationships with colleagues across the organization and be able to work with them in a responsible client orientation and problem-solving mode.

Assist the Operations Assistants and Volunteer Management Assistant in the following tasks:

In-country UN Volunteer Programme

  • Manage incoming requests for V-Force Volunteers and deployment of V-Force Volunteers; send call-outs, screen/ long-list volunteer profiles, identify and select volunteers as per the requirements, organize interviews where necessary.
  • Support the on-boarding of V-Force Volunteers; organize and conduct briefing and orientation porgrammes for V-Force Volunteers; ensure briefings are prepared/shared; promotional materials provided and necessary logistical arrangements are made.
  • V-Force database and Web Portal; Manage the backend database of V-Force; assist with the development of the V-Force web portal; ensure the smooth functioning of the V-Force web portal; assist the developer in carrying out tests on the functionalities of the V-Force web portal.
  • Support the documentation and consolidation of data, lessons learnt, good practices, volunteer stories.
  • International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2018; Assist the UNV COT where necessary in the organizing and coordination of events planned for IVD 2018.



General

  • Assist in organizing events and actively participate in the UNV activities organized or developed in the country.
  • Dispatch documentation ensuring proper process is followed and copies retained and filed.
  • Respond to queries regarding the UNV programme in general and in Sri Lanka.
  • Assist the UNV COT with any other related tasks as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); in development-related fields, preferably with a focus onSocial Science, Development Studies, International Relations, Management or any related areas.
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English required and proficiency in Sinhala and/or Tamil is an advantage.
  • Ability to think and work logically and work precisely with attention to detail.
  • Initiative, sound judgement and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds.
