Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network. It advocates for positive change and connects countries to knowledge and resources to help ordinary people build better lives. UNDP has been working in Lebanon since 1960, supporting the government and the people in their efforts to recover from the civil war, build lasting peace, generate sustainable and equitable growth, and mobilize funds from donors to help the country in these efforts. With the escalation of the crisis in Syria, UNDP’s outreach has expanded to include supporting the Lebanese population to cope with the impact of the Syrian refugee influx. Lebanon has achieved seven of its Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets in health, primary education, and gender equality in education. Yet the most critical of the targets, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, have not been achieved.
In order to reach out to the larger audience and create an understanding of UNDP’s mission and work in Lebanon, it is essential that all key documents should be translated into Arabic English and French
This will Enhance the understanding of UNDP’s mission, goals and on-ground work and Increase the readership of UNDP news and work.

Duties and Responsibilities

The UNDP Country Office wishes to make a long-term agreement with three (3) Interpreters to execute instantaneous interpretation during events from English to Arabic and vice versa. The LTA may be shared as well with other UN agencies in Lebanon who require similar services and the consultant shall offer the services to those agencies to the same conditions.

Competencies

Functional Competencies:

Excellent command of both English and Arabic. French is a plus;
Good communication skills;
Proven ability to work under pressure and in less comfortable situations.

Corporate Competencies:

Demonstrates integrity by modeling the UN’s values and ethical standards;
Advocates and promotes the vision, mission, and strategic goals of UN;
Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
Treats all people fairly without favoritism;
Knowledge of the UN preferable.

Required Skills and Experience

Academic qualifications:

Bachelor Degree in translation or interpretation or social sciences related fields.

Experience:

At least five years of experience as interpreter;
Experience in interpretation and multi-national high-level events and UN agencies;
Proven track record of high quality professional interpretation from English to Arabic and vice versa;
It is important to highlight that applicants shall provide references to assess in detail the qualifications.
