Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In September 2014, UN Women globally launched the HeforShe Campaign which is a solidarity movement for gender equality initiated to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights. In Malawi, the Campaign was launched in February 2015 and the President is one of its Champion.

UN Women is also active in several other advocacy activities and campaigns on gender equality, such as the UNiTE-Say No Campaign to End Violence Against Women Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence.

Reporting to Programme Specialist, the HeforShe Advocacy Assistant works with and provides support to the members of the Programme Team in the development and implementation of effective programmes consistent with UN Women rules and regulations. The HeforShe Advocacy Associate spearheads all advocacy activities mainstreamed over the main goal areas, namely leadership and political participation, violence against women and girls, women’s economic empowerment and governance.? S/he contributes to research, financial management, and programme implementation including providing necessary operational, administrative and programmatic support. The HeforShe Advocacy Assistant works in close collaboration with the operations, programme and projects’ staff in the Country Office and UN Women HQs as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support implementation and monitoring of the HeforShe Campaign;
  • Support all advocacy activities to enhance UN Women visibility at both national and international level;
  • Support advocacy campaign with traditional authorities and government in partnership with civil society and women’s organization
  • Contribute to key national networking and coordination mechanism to enhance attitudinal and behavioral change
  • Support joint UN advocacy and awareness reassign campaigns jointly with other relevant UN agencies
  • Be up to date with global, regional and national (including at local level) issues on gender equality to ensure a proper and immediate advocacy response;
  • Support development of communication materials, including briefing materials and press releases, for UN Women and joint UN events in coordination with relevant staff members
  • Spearhead partnership and coordination with civil society organisations and liaise with donors and other UN agencies;
  • Support development, planning and organization of advocacy activities for other UN Women and joint UN campaigns, also with high level participants;
  • Support development of messaging on issues on human rights and gender equality.
  • Liaise with HQ to ensure alignment with the Global HeForShe Campaign approaches and identify how to adapt to Malawian campaign, in consultation with Malawi Country Office and the Government of Malawi.
  • Identify and propose HeforShe male ambassadors/role models across all society sectors and develop key messages
  • Draw a campaign strategy and work plan with monthly highlights following the global HeForShe campaign calendar
  • Collaborate with  stakeholder partners on coordination of campaign activities amongst partners;
  • Create campaign production schedules, including social media, monitor activity and notify stakeholders of relevant outcomes and plans
  • Contribute to creation of messages and productions to be used in the media and outdoor events

Required Skills and Experience

  • Completion of secondary education required;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications or Social Science is an asset
  • At least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in providing support to the formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and advocacy strategies
  • Experience in working with UN or international organization
  • Experience in the use of computers applications and software packages (MS Word, Excel, as well as web based management systems;
  • Excellent organizational, planning and communication skills:
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa is required
