Background

The UNDP vision for the Strategic Plan, 2018-2021 is to help countries achieve sustainable development by eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, accelerating structural transformations for sustainable development and building resilience to crises and shocks.

Within the Arab Region, UNDP is committed to assist program countries to develop their own integrated, transformative and scalable solutions to tackle the interconnected challenges of poverty, vulnerability, inequality and exclusion, in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, and accelerate economic transformation. This includes measures to enhance prospects for accelerating structural transformation, inclusive growth, jobs and livelihoods at both national and local levels, including through economic recovery and resilience-building in crisis and post crisis contexts, as well as advancing opportunities for the most vulnerable.

The work of the intern is located in the Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development Team of UNDP Regional Hub in Amman, Jordan.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Intern will support the Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development team in producing a Report/Note on the role of UNDP’s Programmatic Support in Structural Transformation in Arab States. The intern is particularly expected to consolidate and document UNDP's current approach and portfolio on poverty eradication and structural transformation of economies in the Arab Region, including in crisis countries, engaging youth, women, and marginalized populations and ensuring cross-sectoral integration and sustainability.

Specific tasks toward attaining these includes:

  • Conducting data collection, desk reviews of existing research and literature on economic transformation in Arab States, and desk review of what UNDP has been doing in Arab countries in realizing structural transformation, and implementing SDGs, and other tasks as required;

  • Compiling charts and tables, analyzing research on thematic topics, review/revise chapters, listing of bibliography, and other tasks as required for the finalization of the report. 

  • Analyzing data collected, case studies, and other existing data sourced from Arab countries

  • Drafting of report

  • The intern will work under the supervision of the RBAP Strategic Specialist.

Required Skills and Experience

- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or

equivalent, or higher) in development economics/ development studies;

- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

- Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
