Background

The UNDP Regional Hub for Europe and the CIS (based in Istanbul, Turkey) is UNDP’s main knowledge and advisory hub for the countries serviced by UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS (RBEC). Through its regional programme, the Hub provides advisory support and knowledge management and innovation services to UNDP Country Offices in the ECIS region in the areas of sustainable development, effective democratic governance, energy and resilience, gender, health and development.

UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2018-21 is to help countries achieve sustainable development by eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, accelerating structural transformations for sustainable development and building resilience to crises and shocks. The Regional Programme of Europe and the CIS 2018-21 is fully aligned with the Strategic Plan. It will consolidate and further expand UNDP’s role as a key multilateral development partner for new and emerging donors in the ECIS region, helping to systematically mobilize knowledge and resources for the benefit of programme countries, including via ‘South-South’ and triangular cooperation as well as through support for increasing aid effectiveness. The Coordination and Quality Assurance Team of the Istanbul Regional Hub is responsible for quality assurance, coordination and results-based management of the Regional Programme, global projects and initiatives hosted by the IRH, their monitoring and evaluation. Currently the team is developing on a number of initiatives, including a new monitoring system for the Regional Programme 2018-21, setting up renewed vetted rosters of experts in country programming and monitoring and evaluation, developing various guidance for programmes and projects to improve quality of programming.

Duties and Responsibilities

The selected intern will be a member of the Coordination and Quality Assurance Team in Istanbul Regional Hub.  and is expected to be in the office full time during the working days. Under the supervision of the Programme Monitoring Associate, the intern will perform the following tasks:

  • Technical support to the set up of the renewed Vetted Experts Rosters, including drafting communications and visibility package; 
  • Assistance in creating a platform for the Regional programme M&E framework  
  • Support in updating the office knowledge management platforms;
  • Provide support to the regional and/or global events, data collection and developing tracking tools for events and provide assistance during the events preparation.
  • Provision of inputs to various databases and reports and prepare documentation related to the team activities.
  • Provision of technical support to quality assurance mechanism in UNDP in complying with corporate filing and reporting requirements
  • Perform other related office duties, as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree in in fields such as international relations, public administration, business administration, public policy, international development or other relevant field;

Experience:

  • Previous related work experience in a national or an international entity would be an asset but is not a requirement;
  • Previous experience for visual interpretation of information (i.e. flowcharts, infographics) would be an asset but is not a requirement

Language skills:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Turkish;

Learning:
The intern will acquire a good overview and practical experience on project management, quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation work in UNDP, and a basic understanding of the roles of a Regional Hub in UNDP

Financial Issues
Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement.
The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out. Selected intern must have medical and life insurance.

UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.

Subsequent Employment
The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 
Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
