UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to implement these standards. It stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five priority areas: (1) increasing women’s leadership and participation; (2) ending violence against women; (3) engaging women in all aspects of peace and security processes; (4) enhancing women’s economic empowerment; and (5) making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting. UN Women coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality. 

The UN Women East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) Communications department is soliciting for interested and qualified candidates (individuals, not firms) to be considered for photographer positions. The expert roster will consist of highly-qualified and experienced candidates. Only applicants who pass all screening procedures will be included into the roster and recommended for consideration for photography and visual consultancy positions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the guidance of the Communication Specialist and in close collaboration with the programme focal points, the experts’ will photograph UN Women programme activities and events, keeping in mind culture, gender and other diverse sensitivities as per UN Women guidelines. The photographs should be usable for diverse audiences and have universal appeal.

Tasks will include:

  • Ensuring consent forms are signed by children and / or guardians as per UN WOMEN guidelines;
  • Ensuring effective and efficient provision of services, full confidentiality in all aspects of assignment, management of information flow and follow-up on deadlines and commitments made;
  • Ensuring dignity of subjects, particularly vulnerable women and girls.

  • Have Adobe Premiere Pro editing skills (and other professional editing software, such as Adobe after Effects, Photoshop, etc.);
  • Have knowledge of different image formats and file conversions for online and social media platforms;
  • Have online video publishing and file transfer skills;
  • Creative, energetic and self-motivated individual;
  • Teamwork, professionalism and communication skills.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Degree in communications, arts, media or any relevant field is an asset and/or certificates in photography is an asset. In lieu of a degree, candidates must have proven experience of 5 years as a professional photographer.

Experience:

  • Minimum three years’ experience in photography;
  • Proven engagement with and support in contributing regularly to leading news agencies, bilateral and multilateral agencies, NGOs etc.

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Knowledge of other UN languages (French, Spanish, Arabic) an asset.                     

Note:                         

  • UN Women will have exclusive rights to the all the raw images and final products;
  • UN Women will provide releases and the producers will be responsible for coordinating all releases from interviewees and anyone appearing in new footage;
  • UN Women has the right to use the images in perpetuity in web and on multimedia platforms and upload any still images to the UN Women photo database;
  • UN Women can provide the images to other UN organizations or the media at no cost, as is the practice.

Contracting arrangements:

Successful candidates will be included in the vetted Roster of Experts for the maximum period of 1 year. Membership beyond the 1-year period must be renewed through a new application process. Entry into the expert roster system does not necessarily mean that contract with UN Women is guaranteed.

Where a request for services arises, the UN Women shall directly contact candidates with the most relevant experience and expertise from the roster.
