Background

Organization context

UNDP Malawi Country Office (CO) has been supporting the Government of Malawi and Civil Society Organizations Taskforce in establishing a National Peace Architecture (NPA) to serve as the national pillar for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and transformation. The NPA will be represented at national and district levels where these structures will engage in a collaborative manner with other key stakeholders in peacebuilding and transformative dialogues that foster unity and social cohesion.

One of the objectives under the NPA is to conduct conflict research and analysis, which requires systematic collection and management of conflict-related data from a wide variety of sources. The NPA is in process of establishing conflict database based on which conflict analysis will be drawn and peacebuilding interventions will be decided. In this context, UNDP is looking for two interns to support data collection and analysis. The interns will also contribute to analyzing trends and early warning signs of conflict through media monitoring.

Scope of Work

The intern will provide support in the following areas:

Data Collection and Compilation: Review of existing data/information available for collecting and compiling conflict related data.
Analysis: Support data analysis which includes providing technical inputs on the processes and findings of the analysis.

Under the guidance of the Communication Office and Social Cohesion project staff, the interns will assist in data collection and information gathering to support the data collection, consolidation, management and analysis processes. The Interns will gain valuable insight into the working of the UN system as well as build their capacity for future work opportunities, particularly in the area of peacebuilding and conflict transformation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Review existing sources of information to derive data for conflict-related incidents, and compile a table of conflict cases with categorization and organization of key information (e.g. date, place, type of conflicts, root causes etc);
Monitor public media sources (both traditional and new media platforms) on a daily basis to capture conflict related issues, early warning signs for conflicts and violence incidents, as well as how the issues are reported;
Regularly update the conflict monitoring table with collected information on weekly basis;
Liaise with organizations that work on conflict issues to solicit data about past and ongoing conflict cases, and consolidate their reports for systematic data analysis;
Provide insights into conflict analysis, using local knowledge (political, institutional, cultural, etc.);
Review reports, policy papers and other relevant materials as required;
Identify possible areas for partnership with local organizations, universities, research institutions, etc. whenever there are entry points;
Develop a work plan for conflict data collection and analysis;
Other duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience

University degree in conflict/peace studies, political science, social sciences, development studies or any relevant field;
Knowledge of statistics would be a plus;
Previous experience of working on data and statistics would be a plus;
Understanding of the social, economic, institutional and political environment in Malawi;
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision;
Knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel

Important to note:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of:

The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or
The intern, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence through private sources.

Medical Insurance

Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.

Costs incurred by interns, including undertaking official travel at the request of UNDP, in the discharge of the activities related to the internship shall be reimbursed by UNDP on the same basis as costs incurred by staff members or costs reimbursed to staff members, including payment of daily subsistence allowance, as applicable.
