Background

UN Women is the United Nations organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.  A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.  UN Women supports United Nations member states as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to implement these standards.  It stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five priority areas: (1) increasing women’s leadership and participation; (2) ending violence against women; (3) engaging women in all aspects of peace and security processes; (4) enhancing women’s economic empowerment; and (5) making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting. UN women coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality.

 

The Ending Violence against Women (EVAW) section is part of the Policy Division at UN Women Headquarters in New York.  The section is responsible for a number of functions including policy and technical advice to regional and country offices on EVAW, supporting the normative work on EVAW at the global level and developing and managing global level programmes. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Ending Violence against Women Acting Chief and Policy Specialist on Institutional Change, the consultant will support the rollout and development of new programmes and policy initiatives at global level:

1. Coordinate and support preparation of discussions with country offices and relevant HQ  for programmatic growth and expansion.

2. Support preparation of technical webinars and technical missions for programmatic growth in relevant areas.  

3. Support analysis and research in relation to areas of work where UN Women will be expanding programmes including but not limited to harmful practices.

4. Support colleagues in the country offices implementing relevant programmes by providing and consolidating technical guidance from EVAW team.

5. Provide required backstop support in preparation for key events around General Assembly, 16 Days of Activism, and others.

6. Support the consolidation of lessons learned, development of programmatic guidance and other information in relevant guidance

7. Support the finalization of HIV-VAW note.

8. Support launch and conceptualization of further work on campus violence work.  

Ongoing activities:

  1. Organize webinars and calls with colleagues in country offices in relevant topics
  2. Coordinate and facilitate sharing of information on relevant programmes and policy work
  3. Provide technical support to country offices for the rollout of new initiatives
  4. Support organizing of events, meetings and others in relation to VAW
  5. Support the development of relevant guidance for country offices in relation to VAW
  6. Support drafting of briefing notes as relevant
  7. Any other activities as requested by the Chief of Section

 

Competencies

  • Excellent analytical and writing reporting skills

  • Ability to work with different actors, including through remote contact

  • Ability to multi-task and address competing priorities

  • Knowledge of gender, human rights, violence against women including trafficking

  • Demonstrates consistency in upholding and promoting the values of UN Women in actions and decisions, in line with the UN Code of Conduct

  • Ability to work in high- pressured environment and handle logistical details

  • Strong sense of responsibility, confidentiality and accountability

  • Good planning, goal-setting and prioritization

  • Strong problem-solving skills

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • Graduate degree in human rights, gender, international development or related field.

  • Knowledge of violence against women and gender equality issues.

  • At least 2 years of experience in developing countries in programmes related to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

  • Strong research experience.

  • Excellent drafting skills.

  • Experience in the use of computer applications and software packages (Excel, Word).

  • Fluency in English required, knowledge of another United Nations language an asset.

  • Experience with the United Nations a distinct asset.
