Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women at the global level focuses its activities on 5 areas of interventions:

  1. Increase women’s leadership and political participation;
  2. Develop women’s economic empowerment;
  3. Ending violence against women;
  4. Increase women’s leadership in peace, security and humanitarian action;
  5. Introduce planning and Gender Responsive Budget.

UN Women in Algeria is currently implementing a cooperation program with the Algerian government that aims at "Strengthening the effectiveness of equal rights for men and women in Algeria". It focuses on three areas of intervention:

  • The political advancement of women,
  • Ending violence against women and girls
  • Dissemination of values of equality between women and men

UN Women based in Algiers is looking for a Reporting and Communication intern for a 3-month period (can be renewable for an additional period of 3 month).

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the National program officer, the intern will:

  • Support the communication’s tools development for several office projects and programmes : brochures, documentaries, etc.;
  • Contribute to feed the UN Women MCO Maghreb quarterly newsletters;
  • Contribute to update and feed the MCO website and Twitter page;
  • Support research on specific thematic relating to UN Women mandate;
  • Support the organization and preparation of meetings and events planned by the Office;
  • Contribute and ensure the visibility of events and key activities planned by the UN (drafting articles, photos, etc.).

In addition, the intern will be responsible for the following financial and administrative tasks:

  • To support events’ organization: service providers’ selections (communication agency, hotels, printer, etc.) and elaboration of terms of references, drafting selection minutes, contracts, etc.
  • To ensure the shaping of reports and documents;
  • To ensure translations and synthesis.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have a master degree in communication or political sciences or international relations or in some fields of social sciences (law, sociology, development) with good skills in communication (especially in social medias)
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills in French (written and oral), English (written) are required;
  • Working knowledge of Arabic is a distinct advantage.

Computer skills:

  • The intern must have good knowledge of Internet and Microsoft tools ((MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of Publisher and Indesign is an asset

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note: In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or  higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed, please note that the Algerian consulate will only issue visas with a 3 months validity period
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
