Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

African Girls Can Code Initiative 2018-2021 (AGCCI) is a new Africa wide programme developed and implemented by UN Women in partnership with ITU Africa Region. The aim of the AGCCI is to expose and equip young girls with digital literacy, coding, and personal development skills. The Initiative will have two components namely:

1. AGCCI Boot Camps: organized annually in a number of countries and targeting young girls aged between 17 – 20 years from all African Countries. The first African Girls Can Code Boot Camp will be held in summer 2018 with 50 young girls aged 17-20 years from all AU member countries. ITU and UN Women aims to scale up the Boot Camps over the coming years, making it an annual event which will take place in different countries reaching more than 1, 000 girls within the 4-year period.

2. Mainstream ICT, gender and coding into the national curricula – working closely with Ministries of Education and Ministries of ICT in all countries across Africa. This part of the Initiative will allow millions of girls both urban and rural girls to begin to learn the IT skills from the early stages of their education primary, middle school to high school. In this way ICT will be engrained in young girls and they will reap the benefit of the global digital boom.
