Background

The UN System in Guinea-Bissau supports the government of Guinea-Bissau in tackling development and peacebuilding challenges to reduce poverty, social and economic inequalities and achieve sustainable peace consolidation. The UNCT in Guinea Bissau is led by the UN Resident Coordinator and represented by FAO, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, WFP, UNHCR, WHO, OIM as well as by the liaison offices of non-resident agencies part of the UNCT.

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) has the function to support the UN agencies in providing coherent, efficient and effective support. As the political and economic context, locally and globally, is constantly evolving, the role of the RCO is dynamic to respond to the changes while being true to the overall mandate of the UN and the DSRSG/Resident Coordinator, and in line with the agreement with the Government of Guinea Bissau as well as the overall process of UN reform called Delivering as One.

The expected benefits from a more coordinated and coherent UN are: increased impact of UN system support through optimizing the use of technical and financial resources and cutting transaction costs particularly for the government. To this end, the leadership of the DSRSG/Resident Coordinator and the UNCT and by extension, the RCO is critical. With technical and substantial capacity, the RCO supports the leadership in preparation of decisions, do follow ups, maintains common planning and monitoring systems, coordination of partners as well as promotes good communication and inclusion.
