Background

The Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. The RC system aims to bring together the different UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level.

Resident Coordinators, who are funded and managed by UNDP, lead UN country teams in more than 130 countries and are the designated representatives of the Secretary-General for development operations. Working closely with national governments, Resident Coordinators and country teams advocate the interests and mandates of the UN system while drawing on the support and guidance of the entire UN family.

The RC System facilitates the alignment of the UN System operational activities for development with national ownership, plans and priorities, to improve the effectiveness of the overall contribution of the UN system and to coordinate with other sources of development assistance. The Resident Coordinator system works to bring together different UN Agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator’s System in Armenia is comprised of the following resident agencies and programmes: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Health Organization (WHO), and non-resident agencies, funds and programmes: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), International Labour Organization (ILO), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA),  International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Office of the Higher Commissioner (OHCHR), and United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI).

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the RCO Head and direct supervision of the RC Office staff, the intern provides assistance to the execution of services in the RC Office in implementation of its activities.

The intern will perform the following duties:

  • Assist in arranging meetings, seminars, workshops, functions, etc.
  • Prepare background information through research, summary notes, etc. on various issues;
  • Draft and translate official correspondence;
  • Support in data collection, processing, and analysis;
  • Draft different documents and prepare excel spreadsheets;
  • Collect, record, photocopy and compile documentation;
  • Design and produce documents, invitation cards, booklets;
  • Provide other support and assistance as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:  

a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in social science disciplines, including but not limited to international relations, political science, translation and communication studies; as well as information technologies, web design or related disciplines;

b) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Computer skills: Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Internet

Languages:   Fluency in English and Armenian (knowledge of Russian is an asset)

Experience: experience in organizing events, seminars, etc and good writing skills in English and Armenian will be an asset.
