UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

 

Unit/ Project Background:

United Nations Secretary-General’s Campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women

Launched in 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign calls on governments, civil society, women’s organizations, the private sector, the media and the entire UN System to join forces to end violence against women and girls, with a focus on five main outcomes:

  • Adoption and enforcement of national laws to address and punish all forms of violence against women and girls in line with international human rights standards
  • Adoption and implementation of multi-sectoral national plans of action that emphasize prevention and are adequately resourced;
  • Establishment of data collection and analysis systems on the prevalence of various forms of violence against women and girls;
  • Establishment of national and/or local campaigns and the engagement of civil society in preventing violence against women and girls and supporting victims of violence against women and girls; and
  • Systematic efforts to address sexual violence in conflict situations.

Launched on 25 November 2010, Asia-Pacific UNiTE is the regional component of the UNiTE Campaign, aimed at strengthening efforts and partnerships to end violence against women and girls in the Asia-Pacific region.  The Regional UNiTE Secretariat is housed within the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this internship is to support planning and executing communications to share and promote information on Ending Violence against Women thematic areas, research and data, workshops and events, and programmatic results. The intern will receive overall supervision from the Programme Specialist – Ending Violence against Women (EVAW).

SCOPE OF WORK:

  • Communications and Documentation:
  • Support the team to draft and share stories and showcase programme activities to promote EVAW;
  • Assist in preparation of knowledge resources, communications, presentations and background material for internal and external use, including fact sheets on thematic issues as well as state-specific content for websites and social media;
  • Coordinating with UN Women Communications Unit on press releases, opinion pieces and social media messaging;
  • Create and update an EVAW-specific folder-system for easy access to relevant high-quality photographs;
  • Draft/and or conduct interviews and collect quotes from EVAW partners in the Region, and/or at EVAW-related workshops and events;
  • Review and edit, from a Communications perspective, submitted knowledge products such as narrative reports, research reports, evaluation reports, videos etc. for projects on EVAW.
  • Support communications activities during thematic days, such as International Day of the Girl Child (11 Oct), International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November), Human Rights Day (10 December), International Migrants Day (18 December).
  • Draft a quarterly internal newsletter on EVAW activities.
  • Provide communications-related support to the UNiTE Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism.

DELIVERABLES

  • Production of EVAW Programme related stories, knowledge resources, presentations, and background material for internal and external use;
  • Produce press- and media related material, such as press releases and social media messages;
  • Updated, easy to use filing-system for EVAW-specific high-quality photographs;
  • Compilation of interviews and quotes from EVAW partners;
  • Quality edits provided to knowledge products;
  • Effective coordination support of messaging during thematic days;
  • Produce a quarterly internal newsletter on EVAW activities;
  • Quality communications-related support provided to the UNiTE Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism.

Photography skills are an asset.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in communications, journalism, gender studies, social sciences or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Excellent communication skill (written and oral) of Thai language is a distinct advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.
