Background

CORPORATE BACKGROUND:

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results.

UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. We support countries' efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities through 2030. The key 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind and stamping out inequality is at the core of everything we do.

UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three main areas:

  • Sustainable development
  • Democratic governance and peacebuilding
  • Climate and disaster resilience

In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable.

INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life.  We are on the ground in 170 countries and territories, working with governments and people on their own solutions to global and national development challenges to help empower lives and build resilient nations.

Being LGBTI in Asia (BLIA) is a regional programme which aims to reduce marginalization and exclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. Initiated in 2012, the programme addresses inequality, violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status, and promotes universal access to health and social services. The research currently being conducted under the programme aims to identify and analyse key issues affecting the health, rights and well-being of LGBTI in Asia. The BLIA programme makes extensive use of information and communications technology to engage with the community, partners and other audiences. Communications efforts are closely aligned with the programme’s objectives and are guided by a communications strategy, which aims to ensure that stakeholders are kept informed of activities and results, and the programme actively engages with online audiences and advocates for LGBTI inclusion. Multiple channels and initiatives are utilized to implement the strategy, including video, social media, blogs, storytelling, newsletters, media outreach, locally tailored content, etc.
