Background

UN Women Country Office in Georgia supports the government and civil society partners in fostering women's empowerment and gender equality. Since 2010 UN Women in Georgia is conducting large scale outreach and communications campaigns to promote women’s right and gender equality in the country. Sports and Arts represent one of the strategically important mediums for transforming social norms and behaviors towards more egalitarian and empowering standpoints. UN Women in its communication campaigns among others has collaborated with artists from the fields of cinema, theatre and literature. Literature can certainly contribute to shaping value systems and may serve as a powerful tool in promoting gender equality. In 2018 UN Women has developed a collection of fairy tales for children from 6 to 10. The project has engaged 12 Georgian authors in producing a collection of 21 fairy tales inspired by real female figures from Georgian history, titled “Once there was a girl”. The fictional stories recount the courageous deeds, determination, wisdom, dignity and fight for justice of the female heroines. “Once there was a girl” became highly demanded book among readers of all age-groups including children.

UN Women plans to translate and publish the book in English language and seeks for the professional literary translator for converting the collection of fairy tales from Georgian into English Language.

The literary translator should work at his/her place and thus should have all the necessary equipment and software for translating and submitting the translation electronically; UN Women will provide Georgian text of the book electronically.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To complete literary translation of the collection of fairy tales “Once there was a girl” from Georgian language to English;
  • To imitate the voice, style, syntax, idioms, meaning and other literary characteristics contained in the original book;
  • To Work closely with authors (if necessary) to capture the intended meaning, as well as the literary and cultural characteristics, of the original publication;
  • To work closely with native English language editor (provided by UN Women) and reflect edits/suggestions in the text;
  • To keep UN women informed about the progress of work and provide all deliverables on-time;

Deliverables:

  • Work-plan for the translation of the fairy tales collection “Once there was a girl” prepared and submitted to UN Women - 1 working day by October 10, 2018;
  • Collection of the fairy tales “Once there was a girl” (about 140 pages of Georgian text) translated from Georgian into English and submitted to the editor (as per the agreed work-plan) – 50 working days by December 17, 2018;
  • Final edited translation of the book in English submitted electronically to UN Women – 9 working days by January 20, 2019.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in humanities or social sciences;

Experience: 

  • At least five years of literary translation experience from Georgian into English language and vice versa;
  • Proven experience of work as professional translator from Georgian into English language and vice versa;

Language:

  • Fluency in Georgian and English Languages.

Evaluation procedure:

The candidates will be evaluated against the following technical and financial criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in humanities or social sciences (max 30 points);
  • At least five years of literary translation experience from Georgian into English language and vice versa (max 150 points);
  • Proven experience of work as professional translator from Georgian into English language and vice versa (max 120 points);
  • Fluency in Georgian and English languages (max 50 points).

Maximum total technical score amounts to 350 points. Only candidates who have passed over the minimum qualification criteria and have accumulated at least 245 points out of maximum 350 under technical evaluation will qualify for the next stage i.e. evaluation of their financial proposals.

Evaluation of submitted financial offers will be done based on the following formula: S = Fmin / F * 150

S – score received on financial evaluation;

Fmin – the lowest financial offer out of all the submitted offers qualified over the technical evaluation round;

F – financial offer under consideration.

The winning candidate will be the candidate, who has accumulated the highest aggregated score (technical scoring + financial scoring).

Management arrangements:

The contractor will report to and work under direct supervision of UN Women Communications Analyst and overall guidance of UN Women Georgia Country Representative.

Financial arrangements:

Payment will be disbursed upon submission and approval of deliverables and certification by UN Women National Programme Officer that the services have been satisfactorily.

*The applicants are required to submit an aggregated financial offer (“aggregated financial offer” is the total sum of all financial claims of the candidate for accomplishment of all tasks spelled out in this ToR).
