Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. The Office of Communications of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York is interested in enrolling a translation intern to assist its Translation Manager. The Office of Communications at UNDP is at the forefront of advancing online communications and outreach within the organization and is seeking a graduate student with an interest in global issues and communications to assist in translating Web and social media content in Spanish for UNDP’s online global network. This is the opportunity for translation graduate students to learn the translation process within an international organization and help the UN’s leading development agency better serve its constituents through the provision of high-quality translations.

Duties and Responsibilities

The interested candidate will:

  • assist in translating media and web content, internal messages to staff and video scripts from English into Spanish, proofreading texts and reformulating if necessary for optimal web presentation.
  • review and edit translations of web stories, headlines, scripts and captions in Spanish, liaising with the rest of the team to ensure consistency across languages.
  • provide feedback and guidance in terminology usage;
  • build and update terminology databases and keep glossaries of technical terms;
  • ensure quality of translations.

  • Solid writing, editing and research skills;
  • strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task;
  • knowledge of translation software (e.g. SDL Trados) and use of translation memories;
  • attention to detail is crucial;
  • responsible, responsive, and enthusiastic;
  • interest in global issues and the United Nations and be aware of political sensitivities;
  • adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team.

Required Skills and Experience

Enrollment in a university degree programme in translation, linguistics or communications-related field.

  • Candidate must either be:
    1. enrolled in graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher).
    2. enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • A university degree (as defined in (1) and (2) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one year of graduation. 

Experience

  • Any relevant work experience in interpretation, localization, translation and publishing would be an advantage.

Language

  • Native fluency in Spanish;
  • fluency in written and spoken English is required;
  • knowledge of another language is an asset.

NOTES

  • Please be aware that internships with UNDP are not paid!
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern.
  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
