Unit/ Project Background:

The UN System Coordination Division at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support the work of the Division. The internship will be with the gender parity team of the Division, which works for the UN Women’s implementation support of the Secretary-General’s System-wide Strategy on Gender Parity (2017). By leveraging from UN Women’s coordination mandate, the gender parity team supports entity-specific implementation plans for gender parity System-wide, works in close collaboration with Gender Focal Points’ network of the UN System, and engages in gender parity related policy work. The Secretary-General has set a timeline of full implementation of gender parity across the UN System and in all its levels by 2028. Therefore, this internship provides excellent insight on UN System-wide efforts towards a UN priority. The intern will assist amongst others with research, data analysis, writing and administration related to the status of women in the UN System. Particularly, the intern is expected to assist in the creation of biennial report on Improvement on the Status of Women in the UN System.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Senior Adviser and Focal Point for Women in the UN System, the intern will assist in the Focal Point’s efforts to improve the gender parity within the United Nations’ System. 

Internship activities will include: 

  • Assist in the creation of the Improvement on the Status of Women in the UN System report through data gathering and analysis of System-wide data;
  • Work and liaise with relevant stakeholders to monitor and evaluate progress towards gender parity;
  • Research and prepare briefs for policy related work on gender parity and equal opportunities;
  • Assist in report and advocacy material writing and editing efforts of the gender parity team, as appropriate;
  • Provide administrative assistance in relation to Gender Focal Points’ meetings and other related events;

Provide support to the Senior Advisor and Focal Point for Women in the UN System, as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

  • The intern must have university level studies preferably in the subjects of international relations, international development, gender studies, law, statistical science, communications, political science and/or similar subject;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Interest towards the entities of the UN system, the UN’s governance, policies and mandates;
  • Knowledge in comprehensive data gathering and analysis desirable.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of another UN language anadvantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

UN Women Internship Policy:

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (a) (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6.) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to positions in the professional and above category in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
