Background

The new UNFPA country programme for Brazil was approved by the Executive Board for a five-year period of 2017-2021 and covers 4 strategic areas: Sexual and Reproductive Health; Adolescents & Youth; Population Dynamics which includes South-South Cooperation in support of the ICPD agenda. The CPD is based on a total resource plan of USD 37.5m of which USD 4,5m regular resources and USD 33m to be mobilized.

At the same time, the UN in Brazil signed a new Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) covering the same 5-year period as the UNFPA CPD (2017-2021). UNFPA Brazil was nominated to coordinate one of the 5 strategic areas, the People pillar. In addition, UNFPA is chairing the Government/Interagency working group on Youth and the Government/Interagency working group of HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, UNFPA is co-chairing the Brazilian Chapter of the Global Health Partnership - H6.

The Private Sector Partnership Advisor serves as a corporate focal point and interface in expanding UNFPA engagement with the private sector in the context of the ICPD and the Agenda 2030, with a focus on – but not necessarily limited to - the advancement of the “Private Sector Alliance for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Brazil”. As a part of the UNFPA Brazil Country Office, the advisor will be based in Sao Paulo and will work in close collaboration with Programme, Operations, as well as Communications units, to drive a coherent and strategic approach to partnerships building and management, and private sector engagement.

The incumbent will lead strategic planning of existing and new partnerships as well as identify innovative modes of collaboration with non-traditional development stakeholders from the private sector, professional associations, multi-sectoral platforms and already existing public private partnerships, among others. UNFPA is particularly interested in expanding partnerships that enhance visibility and awareness of key sexual and reproductive health and rights issues (advocacy partnerships); secure additional resources to address these issues (resource mobilization partnerships); and provide competencies and skills (brainpower partnerships).


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the UNFPA Representative in Brazil, the Private Sector Partnership Advisor acts as the primary focal point and advisor to Senior Management on partnership-building and fundraising, with attention to innovative engagements with the private sector. Major duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Strategic Planning and Coordination of UNFPA Partnerships with private sector;
  • Partnership Building and Outreach;
  • Management of current key Corporate Partnerships;
  • Knowledge Generation and Management.

Description of key functions

Strategic Planning and Coordination of UNFPA/Brazil Partnerships with companies:

Provide guidance and support to UNFPA Brazil to develop and implement corporate partnerships and resource mobilization strategies and initiatives;

Design innovative proposals to strengthen UNFPA reputation in the corporate sector and to generate avenues for greater financial resources from it.

Manage the implementation of selected projects, in coordination with UNFPA staff members and consultants.

Lead internal processes regarding program planning, budgeting, risk assessment, monitoring, evaluation and reporting related to selected projects.

Partnership Building and outreach:

Serve as focal point for corporate partnerships in harnessing and strengthening strategic partnerships for UNFPA. Act as a key resource of real-time partner intelligence for UNFPA/Brazil senior management.

Determine the partnerships landscape to ensure optimal win-win partnerships for UNFPA/Brazil.

Identify and mobilize key strategic partnerships to enhance impact and influence for UNFPA/Brazil strategic priorities.

Outreach and Management of key corporate partnerships:

Manage and provide oversight of all existing corporate/company partnerships and relationships, with particular focus on the “Private Sector Alliance for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Brazil”.

Ensure effective and efficient positioning and packaging of the ICPD and UNFPA mission and programme 2018-2021 in alignment with private sector objectives to engage long-term support and partnership.

Knowledge Generation and Management:

Manage the development, maintenance and sharing of knowledge and intelligence, to ensure UNFPA is informed and positioned to effectively generate and harness opportunities to partner with non-traditional donors from the private sector in Brazil and elsewhere.

Contribute to strengthening the UNFPA Brazil team capacities´ and promote professional growth, learning opportunities and knowledge sharing on corporate fundraising.

Identify and formulate lessons learned and recommendations to be integrated into the Organization knowledge management efforts on corporate and private sector fundraising, including through contributions to Knowledge Networks and Communities of Practice.

Support the Communications unit in the development of materials related to partnerships with the private sector.

Work relations

Internal contacts include the Operations Manager, the CO’s programme/technical team and the Senior Management Team.

Required Skills and Experience

Professional with master’s degree.

At least 8 years of professional experience in public or private sector, preferably in a health-related field.

Fluency in Portuguese and English.
