Background
The United Nations in South Africa committed itself to support South Africa to accelerate its progress towards the achievement of the SDG’s and the development agenda. The National Development Plan vision for 2030 seeks to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality in all its forms and create employment in South Africa. It is against the backdrop of this vision that the wellness of staff should be one of the top priorities within the institution.
The program has an explicit aim of improving the quality of life for all the staff and their families by providing support and helping to alleviate the impact of everyday work and personal problems. The rationale behind wellness program is that of encouraging healthy habits and how they can prevent or lower the risk of serious health conditions at a later stage. The topics include education about nutrition, stress, violence, depression, HIV/AIDS, financial management, gambling, healthy eating and substance abuse.
Duties and Responsibilities
Job Description
- S/he assists with organizing of Wellness events;
- S/he/ will ensure there is Regular Supply of female and male Condoms in all the UN agencies;
- S/he assists with the production of the Wellness Promotional materials eg. pamphlets;
- S/he assists with keeping an updated referral partners contact list;
- She will assist with preparing Wellness Committee meetings and updating minutes
- S/he performs other duties as required.
Expected Programme Outcomes
- Ensure effective planning, implementation and assessment of UN Wellness activities for UN staff in South Africa.
- Focus on Critical Incident and Stress Prevention and Management Activities within the UNDSS CISMU strategic framework.
- Work with Wellness Committee to develop and implement a plan to operationalize UN Cares 10 Minimum.
- Support the UN coordinator to raise awareness and advocate for positive living for UN staff, including stigma and discrimination.
- Monitor and assess the impact of wellness activities.
- Develop and implement an outreach strategy for the UN Wellness activities and reach staff outside Gauteng.
Furthermore, interns are encouraged to:
- Increase their understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and South Africa’s National Development Plan;
- Share their academic knowledge of Wellness for development with the UN staff and in South Africa;
- Benefit from briefings and capacity-building activities organized by the national and regional office and other UN Agencies in South Africa to gain insight into the work of the United Nations.

- Relevant experience in similar positions i.e understanding staff wellness
- Interns are required to adhere to the United Nations core values of integrity, professionalism and respect for diversity, as well as to core competencies of Wellness, teamwork, and planning and organizing.
Required Skills and Experience
Education
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Social Work, Psychology or any other related field.
- She/he must be registered with South African Council for Social Service Profession (SACSSP) or Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- She/he must understand issues of confidentiality. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS is an added advantage.
Experience
- Mastery of standard MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Prior work experience in the field of accounting or auditing would be useful but is not necessary.
Language
- Fluency in written and spoken English required;
- Proficiency in other languages desirable.
Additional Information
- Internship is located at UNDP Office in Pretoria;
- Internship will be full time;
- Internship starts on February 2019; and
- Internship will be for a period of three months, with a possibility of extension to six months.
Conditions:
- UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
- All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
- UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
- The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
- Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
- The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
- Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
